The Metal Gear Solid 4 poster contains strange numbers, a bar code, and symbols. Most people think these were made up, but there certainly not! Here's the poster in full view. (If somebody has this image in a even higher resolution please PM me.)
The White Sands Missile Range:
Mission A-001 and A-002 were the second and third in the series of abort tests to demonstrate that the Apollo launch system would perform satisfactorily under selected critical abort conditions. These two tests were performed on May 13, 1964 and December 8, 1964 at the White Sands Missile Range, which was formerly known as the "White Sands Proving Grounds." It is located in a valley between the Organ Mountains and the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. (Note: The White Sands are actually gypsum crystals which have leached out of the surrounding mountains.)
There have been a number of spies at White Sands over the years, and not all of them were caught. The true identity of the post-WWII Soviet spy code-named "Perseus", for example, is still unknown.
Please note the parallels to Metal Gear in the following:
--------
Perseus, according to Greek legend, was the son of Danae, the only child of Acrisius king of Argos. Disappointed by his lack of male heirs, Acrisius asked an oracle if this would change. The oracle told him that one day he would be killed by his daughter's child. She was childless and, meaning to keep her so, he shut her up in a brazen chamber. But Zeus came to her in the form of rain, and impregnated her. Soon after, their child Perseus was born.
None too happy, but unwilling to provoke the wrath of the gods by killing his offspring, Acrisius cast the two into the sea in a wooden chest. They washed ashore on the island of Seriphos, where they were taken in by Dictys, the brother of king Polydectes, who raised the boy to manhood. Now after a time Polydectes fell in love with Danae, and so wanted to get Perseus out of the picture. He thereby hatched a plot to send him on a suicide mission.
Perseus is most famous for slaying the Medusa. "Perseus" is also the name of a constellation.
--------
Now, back to reality.
"Perseus" was a Soviet spy who stole valuable secrets from the Manhattan Project in 1945, as well as information from the WSMR. It should also be noted that in his new book, "Every Man Should Try", Jeremy Stone accuses a prominent American physicist of being "Perseus", and refers to him as "Dr. X". (Dr. X could possibly be Hal Emmerich's grandfather.)
Shifting away from the topic of missile/rocket development and the Soviet Union, "A-001" and "A-002" offer added insight:
According to logs of the US Congress (found via thomas.loc.gov/), "A-001" was a proposed amendment (1994) to require that the Hydrogen Technical Advisory Panel shall report to Congress on the extent of financial participation of foreign entities in hydrogen research.
By unanimous consent, the Traficant amendment was withdrawn.
"A-002" was a proposed amendment (2001) with the intention of requiring a study, conducted by the GAO, to be reported to Congress within 4 years of enactment, to assess the need (if any) for amendment of the prohibition on human cloning; and provides that the study should include a discussion of new developments in medical technology, the possibility of medical advances, public attitudes, and ethical views.
In 2001, the House of Representatives voted almost unanimously against the legalization of Human Cloning.
There are also added connotations to A-001 and A-002, as well as the remaining code "S-01", refer to drilling for nuclear materials and oil wells, but the meanings are unclear as of right now.
The military symbols:
The symbols shown on the poster are still used by the US Army. A quick overview on the meanings:
=
Division or Command of an Air Force
=
Corps or Air Force
=
Army
=
Infantry
The rest I was unable to find but are certainly also military symbols. (Symbols found via www.army.mil/)
But what's with the location of those circles/ovals? Is that the actual placement of those infantry divisions in real life around the White Sands Missile Range?
With all these Infantry units abound, this game could take place in the middle of a war on a battlefield, which led to the conclusion that this is what is meant by 'No Place To Hide', because it'd be hard to hide and sneak around on a battlefield.
There's also the fact that Kojima said there were hints in the MGS4 teaser trailer. The first one might be the first thing we see, the soldiers shooting at apparently enemies, and the bomb falling on the building, taking away Snake's hiding place, suggesting also that the game takes place on a battlefield where there's no place to hide.
The game may also take place in the desert because it's hard to hide in a desert.
Now consider this: What if White Sands Missile Range is the desert location, and the indicated infantry units are involved in the fighting? (I want everybody to still remember this image from the official Metal Gear Solid art book.)
The only question is who their enemy would be? And I'm going way off topic on the symbol meanings.
The bar code:
This is no normal bar code, you won't see this on any product. The spaces between the lines are to big and must indicate it's a specially designed bar code, also since the numbers are very different on that what you would see on a normal bar code.
The only three persons in Metal Gear Solid who ever had a bar code where Liquid Snake(on his right arm to be exact that is now transplanted on Ocelot), Psycho Mantis, and Raiden.
The same style bar codes where also used in the intro of MGS2 revealing names, take a look. Maybe this bar code also contains a name?
And the last thing I have to add is that you can see a year on the bar code, 1684. Here are all the events, deaths, and births in that year.
