It's been almost a year since I played MGS2, so I decided to do it. Man, was the game ever sloppy!!!! I did not realize until I played MGS3. The codecs, the story, the USELESS plot twists. Wow, MGS2 was just poorly done all the way. The gameplay and graphics are good for their time, but the game design and story is just so rushed and poorly polished.
I mean, what the hell was the point of the damn S3 plan? Why waste time having a good cutscene where Ocelot talks about what ISN'T the S3 plan and then have a BORING and poorly placed Codec for 20 min about the real deal? That sucks! Look at the number of cutsences and codecs! 15 min of gameplay, then 3 min cutscene, 15 min codec, another 2 min cutscene, more codec!!!! Look at the ending. What an anticlimactic fight! And yet another COMPLETELY useless and out of the blue plot twist of Solidus killing Raiden's parents! I am just in disgust! To be honest, I enjoyed Metal Gear 1 on MSX2 more that MGS2.
All the way through the Big Shell story is just BAD! BAD!!! I can't get over how Kojima could screw up so much. The Tanker was good, and the Big Shell started out well too. But did he ever drop the ball on the thing. The half-way point of the overall game is after the Tanker and Stillman's death. That was good. But after it... BAH!
I never saw it that way until after I played MGS3.

I just hope you don't say the same thing about MGS3 after you play MGS4.

Well, I've never really though much of MGS2. I always said that MGS1 was better in terms of story, and as an overall package.
MGS3 is in my oppinion the best in EVERY way. There is really nothing in the game that I would change. Minor character development flaws, but no big deal. The game is sound and is about as good of a product as you can get on a PS2. Much as MGS1 was on the PS1.
See, when you have 2 games on the same system, you can compare them as equals. You can't compare MGS and MG2, nor can you compare MGS2 and MGS1.
MG2 was better than MG, but that's ok, MG1 was an experiement. MGS2 failed to surpass MGS1, a game on a lesser system. That's not acceptable. And now MGS3 shows how the game should be like on the PS2.

What hell... ;D
Your mind really can change from year to year. You just got to love or hate it. We all know it's a long dragging game with it's scenes, codec moments and some of it's story moments might sound stupid, it's all just got to evolve further into MGS4.

MGS2 is a necessary evil, just like ocelot in MGS3. Like, you want to kill it, shoot it right in the damn head while it's just laying there, un concious, but you cant. You need it to enjoy all the other games.

In my eyes, especially after MGS3, MGS2 droped the ball in progress. It is the only game in the series that is not superior to its predecessor. MGS1 easily holds it's own against it and is better in many ways. What can I say, a fresh look at MGS2 and...

Huh...I knew MGS2 sucked from the get-go, the second you find out that Raiden is the main character...(horrible flashbacks)

Tanker was just as bad as plant.

I disagree. I liked the Tanker part. The only drawbackw as that it was too short. Other than that it was great. I think that if Kojima left the escape part in the game, that would've been great. The Tanker flooding and you have escape, man, that be awesome!

I'm also of the mind that the Tanker part was the best part of the game. Everywhere else, I feel Kojima just tried too hard to outdo MGS1, which totally ruined it. I played the Tanker chapter over the summer and was like "Wow, this is still great", but ten minutes into the Plant chapter I was already tired of it and couldn't bear to sit through some 12 more hours of dreariness. I turned it off and haven't played it since.

I agree with AG, and it didn't even appear as a mini game in MGS2:Substance! Doesn't Kojima know what the fans look out for?

Not really. He makes the games more to fulfill his own goals.
Think about it, what was it that EVERYONE wanted after MGS2? Play as Snake in the Big Shell. Did we get it? NO. We got useless whoring of VR. Had they put Snake's part of the Big Shell in Substance, that would've raised the credentials of Sons of Liberty as well seeing how it would be a two-part game. That would've been a stroke of genious, a completely original idea. But Kojima droped the ball on that one. Substance could've been part two of Sons of Liberty.

I agree with you Arsenal. I am actually one of the few people who liked Raiden, had he been developed correctly. A lot of people hated his voice actor, but in my opinion, it was kind of like Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in Episode 2. Everyone thought he was whiney...but that's what Director Lucas told him to do. The same could be said for Quentin Flynn (sp?) I'm sure he was told to act it out as a whiney new guy. But yeah, back on track...there were some moments on the Big Shell where I was just like "...what?" it's almost like they didn't want to spend the time animating the cut scenes, so they put them in Codec form. And then they justified it by saying "we don't want anyone to overhear us"....wait, wait? is Codec telepathic? The Ninja and Raiden talked directly in front of each other over Codec, as did Aimes and Raiden. Unless Codec has changed since Metal Gear Solid, then it requires talking to work. That made no sense.
Also, I flat up ignored some parts. Such as "he's called Vamp because he's a Vampire?" "No, it's because he's bisexual, he was Dolph's lover"...i just had to kind of hit triangle and skip that. That was ridiculous. Same with the implied homesexuality between Volgin and Raikon in MGS3. I appreciate Hideo's humor when it's in the form of hidden things, but when it's interfering with gameplay, I get frustrated.
I'm not overly sure why he can't make a game with a deep plot that doesn't require me going ".....whaaaaaaaat?" after every single one. MGS3 was the most plausible, and I guess MGS1 wasn't bad...so that just makes MGS2 the guilty culprit.
