My girlfriend brought up a very interesting point... the main charater of a Metal Gear game SUCKS at saving people! And no matter who it is, as soon as they are suppose to save someone, they fail. Let's have a look, shall we: Metal Gear: Gray Fox - runs off to join Big Boss. Metal Gear 2: Kio Marv - dead. Metal Gear Solid: DARPA Chief and Kenner Baker - dead. Metal Gear Solid 2: Prsident Johnson - dead. Metal Gear Solid 3: Sokolov - dead. The Metal Gear "Main Character Syndrome". Big Boss had it, Solid Snake had it, and Raiden had it. Man, if you see any of them comming to rescue you, you know you'r f...cked. ;D I can just see MGS4, Otacon is captured. Snake contacts him and says that he's comming to save him. Otacon, "NOOOOOOOOOO!"

Now, the key thing is that they can still save people, so as long as it's not their mission.
Metal Gear - Snake saved many prisoners along the way. Metal Gear 2 - Snake made it out with Holly. Metal Gear Solid - Snake made it out with Otacon and Meryl. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Well... at least Raiden made it out. Come to think of it, Emma didn't make it... go Raiden... Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake made it out with Eva.
So, as long as the main character does not go in to save you specifically as part of his mission, you're OK. If you're on the mission objectives list, kiss your ass good bye! Unless it's Raiden, then you're screwed either way. ;D

Funny that Oga was saved by Snake yet Raiden didn't save her I guess this also falls under main character swiching.

Well... now that I look at some of the revisions, I think that Snake and Big Boss fall under the fail if it's part of the mission, succeede if it's not. Raiden just scews up from both angles.

Both angles and breaking the 5th wall by making fans hate him, getting crush by the Shagohod just goes to show. Although Raiden get's shot by Big Boss in MG2:SS, yet he is never part of the "failed" nor "lives" part .

Let's just hope there won't be any main objectives to save Otacon. I don't really wanna see him dead. ;D

Actually, I want to see Otacon die in the next game. I know it sounds mean, but it's the most dramatic death I can think of. Especially if he takes a bullet for Snake.

The "Main Character" Syndrome seems worse than foxdie.

Actually, the hard part is building the character up to make it a big deal, and that's done already. All Otacon has to do is "stay behind and die" or "take a bullet for Snake"... It would be hard to mess that up.

Or Foxdie kills him for some F*** up reason....or his PC station craps out because he left the PAL card in his other pair of pants, locking him out of his PC and dies from non-exposer to the internet, just like those WoW players.

Well, Otacon is the tragic character of the series. He lost Wolf in MGS1 and Emma in MGS2. Not to mention the whole thing with his Father's death that he blames himself for. So, I do think that something will happen with Otacon. I really don't see him loosing someone since that would be redondunt. But his own death would fit well with tragety of his life.
