Nintendo acually did something very, very, very, very smart. By announcing the change to the name Wii , they got the puns and griping for it out of the way for E3 so they could focus on the games and the accual system, not the name.
Also, like the name or not, every videogame blog, webpage or forum has been talking about the Wii change as of yesterday or two days ago. You can't buy that kind of media exposure. And Nintendo got it for FREE. The little poem they wrote explaining why they changed it is a bit cheesy, but it's an A+ in Buisness 101.

Smart move indeed. The change of name actually fits Nintendo's strategy-- a known one, not a possible inconstant one. Nintendo isn't trying to appeal to the shallow ego that some in the general gaming community might have. Their shifting gears-- going for that untapped gold mine and breaking away from the pack. Nintendo clearly is no longer interested in the status quo, and I admire their independent thought. Their becoming successful at showing everyone why Nintendo became synonymous with gaming in the past and why the Playstation is today. It's because they offered the goods that the consumer wanted, and it had nothing to do with the name. A good name will get you noticed, what you do afterwards depends entirely on the quality of your offering.
