So, Metal Gear has many spin-offs. Some of them suck, some don't.
I personally felt Metal Gear Rising is underappreciated among some members in the community, mostly because it abandons stealth and because it ruins Raiden's happy ending. The latter part is true. I don't really like where this story takes Raiden. He basically regresses to his child soldier's self, but is still treated as a superhero we should look up to.
However, as Kojima treats this game as a non-canon spin-off, from that perspective, the story doesn't really matter. It's a meaningless action story that shouldn't be taken seriously. A what-if scenario that gives you an excuse to play as a cyborg ninja.
Gameplay: This plays similar to games like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry or even Zone of the Enders. It's a fast-paced melee action game. I'd say it's not as complex as DMC or Bayonetta, but it is still a very polished game that runs at smooth 60 fps and gives you a lot of cool combat scenarios. Where the game shines are its boss fights. These are ridiculous, but very epic. It also spurts some incredible music tracks during those fights, if you are into metal. It's also a game that I have played multiple times.
Why this game is deserving of the Metal Gear name imo is, because the concept of an overpowered cyborg ninja plays an important role in the main series. It's not like Metal Gear Acid which pulls the card game concept pretty much from out of nowhere and it's not a lackluster toned down port of main series gameplay a la MPO. It just takes a concept from the main series and transplants it into a fun action game that shouldn't be taken seriously. So, I can definitely recommend it, if you like or are interested into this type of game. I've come to like melee games more than shooters, but to each his own.
There's also Ghost Babel, which I have never played much, but which is supposed to be very good. It's a bit sad that these non-Kojima games are just glanced over, even though some of them are really good.
