So, I must be stupid or something, 'cause it took me two years to get it. They're named after the two characters in Titanic, Jack and Rose.
I should've learned that more soon I guess, since I know Jack's name was changed during production. He was originally going to have Brannigan as last name, but that would destroy the point.
Oh, while talking about Raiden... Raiden is a Japanese God of Thunder and Lightening, and Rai actually means thunder and Den lightening.

You didn't know about the Titanic hommage? That was on the bonus disc that came with the EU release of MGS2. The whole sinking tanker thing is an hommage to Titanic.

That's the first time I ever heard of Raiden. I was like "Woah, there's going to be a character called Raiden? That's awesome!" Of course, it sounds so much cooler if you say Raiden's name the way they say it in Mortal Kombat - "Ray-den" so I was like...woah, this character will probably be a badass with a name like that. I hate pronouncing it "Rye-den".
