After the battle with The Boss, the flowers in the field turn from white to red. What did this symbolize to you? What about when Snake lets the flower pedal go out of the plane and it turns from red to white again? What did this symbolize to you?
When I first beat the game, I was like...c'mon, that's so unrealistic...flowers can't change like that because of some supernatural junk. Second time I played it through, I realized it was more of an abstract thing, not something that supposed to be taken exactly literal. To me the flowers turning red symbolized Snake's transition from purity and immaturity into something mature and no longer pure. I still can't make any sense out of the symbolism of Snake letting the flower pedal go out of the plane and having it turn color. Perhaps it symbolized him leaving a part of himself such as his purity behind on that battlefield. Wait, come to think of it, I think I've found my answer right there!
You guys weigh in now on what the symbolism means.

You pretty much said what I've been thinking this whole time. Kudos.

I don't know how Snake saw the whole scene of white flowers turning red, but I can tell you my thoughts about it and how I saw it.
The Boss said light (white) is nothing but a farewell gift from death to those on their way to die. Red means beginning of life. When The Boss dies, she dies as a human, but she is then born as part of history. But, she will be remembered as a terrorist - she is sentenced to a fate worse than to be forgotten.
The Patriots (then the US Branch of The Philosophers) created The Boss as she was to be remembered. They created the definition she became. Big Boss had a red pelet in his hand, but he knew then, that he was going to take down the creators of what The Boss defines as part of history - a terrorist. He knew he was going to undo her part in history. People wouldn't change their mind about The Boss if an organization they are unaware of is eliminated, but Big Boss doesn't think that way.
Big Boss saw The Boss as a patriot in every way, shape, and form.
Edit:
Um, I read my post to make sure it was okay, but realized it was wierd. Don't think too much about my post, it'll drive you crazy. I didn't think too much while writing it. ;D

I think The Sorrow was with her when she died, and that he turned the flowers red.

Of course! You're a smart dude Otty! That's a referense to the Holy Bible. There is a guy, don't know who, who could make water into wine. The Sorrow can have it rain blood. He of course made the flowers red.

No I think that is wrong Otty and TBOL, sorry.
The symbolsim of the flowers to me was the events that happend. The Boss was killed, the flowers were red. When Big Boss let it go, the event of her death and the real truth of what happend was forgotten, just faded away, back to the way it was before.

I changed my mind. At second thought, it just didnät click that The Sorrow would do something like that. Actually, I have yet to make an interpitation.

Maybe your right Genaside II, but who maked the flowers/leaves red? It must have been The Sorrow...
The Sorrow can contact with the spirits, he can come into dreams and he can appear in the present world as a ghost. Nobody els could turn those flowers red, only The Sorrow could do it.

Yeah, but you see, Otty, it doesn't necessarily have to be a "logical" reason behind it. It's the symbolism. Listen to what Para-Medic has to say about how to absorb movies.

Yeah, I think your right. Maybe we will learn the true meaning in some interview with Kojima.

I don't think there is such a thing as a true meaning. I think there are as many meanings as there are individuals who have played the game.

Serously, there doesn't have be a real reason why, it's symbolic.
