I never really thought about this before, but Otacon states in MGS2 that the Patriots are already dead, right. For almost a hundred years.
But the first cloning happened in 1972, and even back then it was held a secret from the public by the Patriots. Meaning, they were already alive at that time. So it can't be that they were already dead a hundred years.
That made me think even more. The Patriots love to hide technology, information etc. from the public. Now here goes, how come that in 1972 they were already capable of cloning human beings while we couldn't even clone an animal back then? It's because the Patriots now MUCH more then we do, in terms of technology and the human life form.
I'm not done yet. I think the Patriots have found a way to keep them selfs alive to continue their own legacy with no one knowing of their where abouts. To confuse people like Otacon and many others. For a long time the idea was AI's, but it could also be that new Patriots are selected if others die. Or in the worst case scenario, they clone themselfs...

Wait, they're clones AND AI?

Okie-dokie...
As you know, he's talking about the very FIRST patriots, which they were known as the Philosophers.
That's because they are different members of the Patriots, the original ones died in the 1930's as stated by The Boss.
I dont think they clone themselves. At first I thought too that they were AI's after the conversation JFK had with Raiden. But then in MGS3 The Boss states that new members are selected once the original ones die.

But that still isn't a hundred years as Otacon says...

Otacon said ABOUT 100 years ago.
1930's to 2009 is 70-79 years.
Think about it, it's the closing moment of the game, what sounds more dramatic:
They all died about 100 years ago!
They all died 70 to 79 years ago! ;D

True. We want Otacon to look like the super-genius, not the geek. ;D

I think that there's more than meets the eye here, I mean, why would the CURRENT Patriots want to erase name list of Philosophers from GW? I mean, if they're all dead, who cares who they were? Also, we all remember the Otacon/Snake conversation at the end of MGS2
"It contains the names of 12 people. Snake, it was one of our biggest contributors!"
Damn it, I wanna know who Otacon is talkin about there. He knows one of the original Philosopher, at least his name. Their contributor? Who's contributor? Snake and Otacon's? Or The U.S.'s contributor? This is one of the biggest mystery, and I hope it's revealed on MGS4.

Well, who would support Phylanthropy?
I bet Big Boss is behind it, under a different name though.

It seems like any route you take it all goes back to Big Boss. Snake been kept in the dark for a long time, I bet Roy Cambell knew or knows much more than what he told Snake. Like where Snake asked him why the U.S Government don't just hand over Big Boss's remains and he replied by ....... .

I think Metal Gear is like Star Wars, deseptive.
For the longest time we all thought that the story is all about Luke, but after the Eps. 1,2, and 3, we know it's about Anakin.
Same here. We thought it was all about Snake, but it is actually about Big Boss.

Well, who would support Phylanthropy? I bet Big Boss is behind it, under a different name though. But see, Big Boss wasnt part of the original Philosophers, and that's the list of names that Snake and Otacon got. I doubt it's Big Boss.

But Big Boss couldn't really be part of The Philosophers because after Operation Snake Eater, Big Boss went on to setup FOXHOUND.
