I’m not a nerd who bores his friends with talk about my main interest Metal Gear Solid. I often quote characters from the games, and I usually mention Kojima’s name as to make sure they don’t think it was my own words. So after spending some time with me, the name Hideo Kojima is much printed in to your brain. Some people who I spend more time with than other’s, like my girlfriend and my mother, are destined to ask who the hell Kojima is.
And so my girlfriend did. She asked me who the hell Kojima is. I said he was a video-game auteur, a genius. She replied by looking at me as if I was a fool. We then got into this massive discussion. She said video-games was for kids and men. I won’t go into details, but we ended up saying that if I read Harry Potter, she would sit with me on a Metal Gear Solid play through (I happened to say Harry Potter was for kids a while back ago, she wanted the books themselves to make me draw back that statement).
So, I started to read Harry Potter and are still active doing so, and me and my girlfriend sat down to play the original version of Metal Gear Solid to PSX only a few days ago.
Now, I was worried she would have a problem with the graphics, since she unlike me didn’t grow with them. But after telling me that the Codec screen looked kind of silly, she didn’t complain anymore.
We played for six straight hours (stopped playing at 0600 in the morning since we had to get on a bus). During these six hours, her yes shined from hiding tears several times, and each time I suggested we could stop playing she said that I would only dare… Okay, not those words exactly. But whenever I said we could take a brake, she told me she wasn’t tired and that we could play until morning. I started to realize she actually found it interesting.
Hell, during the game, she would start making theories and trying to understand why two guys suddenly died of a heart attack and why Naomi some times sounded frustrated and angry for no apparent reason and who the hell Deepthroat was. I could actually see how my girlfriend was sucked into the game and became fascinated by the superb plot, complex characters and the deep themes, just like I once were.
We played the remaining hour of the game when we got home to me later that day. She asked pretty soon when we were going to play through Sons of Liberty. I said she wouldn’t have to. Our agreement after all was that I read Harry Potter if she played Metal Gear Solid. My girlfriend isn’t afraid of admitting defeat and she said to me she wanted to sit by for Sons of Liberty too.
And we just finished Metal Gear Solid 2 yesterday. Let me tell you, if she was impressed by Metal Gear Solid, then that’s nothing compared to how she felt during SoL. She would scream out loud whenever she felt something was similar. I wish I had a video-camera to catch her face when suddenly we got a call from Deepthoat – sorry, Mr. X – and when the ninja returned. Her eyes got teary several times, when Emma died, when Helena died and when Solidus revealed on top of Federal Hall why he wanted to defeat the Patriots.
Afterwards, she asked me hundreds of question about Metal Gear Solid and the series. She, like everyone, didn’t understand everything only from one playthrough.
Now we have played MGS3 also, and she loved it. She has decided to review video-games in the school magazine and she went to the video-game store with me yesterday.
She PLAYED Snake Eater actually. She only handed over the control when she panicked or when there was a bossfight. However, I forced her to play the battle against The Sorrow. You should've seen her face....
