The Patriots

Okay...as I've made it clear in past posts, I apparently don't know as much about Metal Gear as I would hope to know. But here it is. The question that has bugged me since I re-beat MGS3.

The Patriots were supposedly originally known as The Philosophers and were a joint group with China and Russia, correct? But they eventually changed their name to the Patriots in the 70s. But then...at the end of MGS2, Otacon discovers that the Patriots died over a hundred years ago. How can this be? Unless it is some kind of trick.

My original thought was that he perhaps tracked the original Philosophers, but even that can't be, because they were alive and well for WW2 in the 1940s. So I am leaning towards the whole "it was a trick" angle.

Any opinions, or even better, facts that I somehow overlooked (again)?

The original Philosphers all died over 100 years ago. However, the Patriots were a group that was reformed as the Philosophers and renamed The Patriots.

Yeah, its only the original members that died out. The organization kept running on though.

Yup, that list that Otacon has is the list of names of the very first members of the Philosophers. It makes you wonder, are there really only 12 members right now? 12 members were the Wisemen's Committee when the Phisolophers were still united, but when they obtained the Legacy and became the Patriots, I wonder if the number of members went up.

errr...christ, i swear i read things all wrong. i though it said that the Philosophers were united at the beggining of WW2...oh well.

Yeah man. The Philosiphers were came together way before WW2 back sometime in the 1900's. But the group quickly died out. Then the Philosiphers legacy was retrieved and the Patriots formed to take the Philosiphers' places.
