Ever since Metal Gear Solid 2 I had a theory on a post-Kojima Metal Gear series. The fact remains is that without him they will be hard-pressed to work with the main cannon. Can they go beyond “Guns of the Patriots” without Snake, perhaps with Raiden or a brand new character? Maybe, but it just would not be the same. I just can’t see how they can do that and make the series work. Not to mention trying to top MGS4.
So, what’s the answer? Side stories? No. Metal Gear Ghost Babel and the two Acids have proved that the market for non-cannon Gears is not a big one. Acid 1 and 2 clearly shown low sales that are forcing the team to make a cannon game for the PSP. The bottom line is that the games will have to be cannon to sell.
It seems like a situation of being between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand you can’t really continue with the main cannon and on the other you really can’t deviate from it either. Solution comes in the form of “Portable Ops”. I believe that this game is the first in a long line of what I call “Fillers”. And this is what I see in the future of the Metal Gear series. They can make cannon games without really messing with the plot. There are years worth of gapes between each of the primary installments. That’s what they will concentrate on. I’m sure you will see Snake’s philanthropy work prior to the Tanker incident. We may get some missions staring a young Solid Snake, say between MG2 and MGS as a CIA agent. Gray Fox is character they have not taped so I can see a game that’s set in the 80’s starring him. The options are plentiful.
These games aren’t the pillars of the series like the Big 6 that Kojima made. But they will still be cannon and they will give them the opportunity to milk the series further. Games like that won’t have an incredibly vital plot, nor do they need to since they are fillers between the core installments. A lot of sack can be given to a filler so there’s less pressure.
That’s what I predict for the post GOTP era.
