Here's something else that I've notice after watching more on this game. The character movements, abilities and such are all from MGS3. So, not only are we getting the character models from MGS3, but the basic game system as well. Same stance, same walk, same run, same grapples. Same was true of Acid, all the gameplay actions were taken right out of MGS2.
In all other titles we see a change, something brand new. That holds true even with the games that are on the same systems. Look at Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2. The stance, the walk, everything is different. Same with MGS2 and MGS3. I think that’s my biggest problem with this game. It is not technologically advanced or conceptually original to be a stand-alone installment in the cannon. In all respect it looks interesting, but it’s no more than an expansion of MGS3. How can it be viewed otherwise?
It would seem that the handheld titles are designed to cash in on the main games in some form. Ghost Babel was essentially a 2D mirror of MGS1. Snake’s suit, Guard’s outfits, Boss similarities, and even the Metal Gear tank design... all of it. Acid 1 and Acid 2 directly mimic the gaming style of MGS2. Granted Acid 2 has a outfit change, but the motions are all the same. And now Portable Ops is duplicating Snake Eater.
In my opinion, if they want to make a pleasing handheld Metal Gear (and one that would actually SELL for a change) they need to create something new. Want to have a different director and still make it part of the cannon? Fine. But at least make it new and original. I think part of the problem is that no time is given to the titles’ development. Every year there is a new one. Give it at least 2 years and develop something really worth while instead of making half-baked clones.
In all honesty, I would not have a problem with Portable Ops if the would just keep it as what it deserves to be, and extra for MGS3. It is not worthy to be a main cannon installment.
