Though I cringe at the way things MAY turn out, I do see a degree of possiblity for that relationship.
The first two titles on the PSP were a miss in my oppinion. Acid and Acid 2 were... well... Meh. And the fact that they turned away from that and decided to put cannon titles on the system proves that.
Portable Ops is a good expansion of MGS3. It offers new features with characters from Snake Eater and continues the story. It enough to expand on the existing installment, but not big enough to screw things up (too badly).
I see that as a chance for future Metal Gear titles on PSP. They can use the system from Portable Ops (comic cutscenes, minimal voice recording) and expand on the existing installments.
How about Snake's part in the Big Shell? Or how about Snake's philanthropy missions around the world?
Such things can be very well implemented using the PSP, and it won't tarnish the main timeline.
Just my thoughts on it. I'm sure they'll continue making Metal Gear games, but this way would be most complimentary to the series.
