The HUD, Heads up display, in Metal Gear Solid haven't been that much of a problem for me. I mean, look at GUN, I had to turn the HUD off to see what was going on because it literally covered every square inch of the screen.
Personally, I don't like HUDs. I get distracted by them, and they keep telling you "you're playing a video-game". That's the way I see it anyways. Therefore I like games like ICO and Jak & Daxter and Grand Theft Auto, that either lets you turn the HUD off completely or have a dynamic HUD that doesn't show unless you press a button that brings it up.
In MGS3, the HUD was fairly small and stylistic, but in MGS4, I would want to see the option of turning it off completely or having no HUD as default.
The life bar... I don't think we need one. This is next gen, we should be able to see on the character we're playing that he doesn't feel so good. The character might walk slower, have visible wounds and he could moan to let us know. I myself think it's far more exciting to not know how much life I have left for my character. That way I must be more careful when playing.
Weapon slots... I don't mind if they would keep the weapons and items menus that appear when you press R2 and L2. But, I would like if they disappear when you release the buttons. Up to MGS3, you could see what weapon and item you had equipped. But now it's next gen, and with the great graphics of MGS4 one should have no problem distinguishing what type of rifle you have equipped or what type of grenade.
I don't know what else the HUD might display in MGS4, but I hope that you can just turn the HUD off. Perhaps it's not such a good idea to take it away completely, because many people like to rely on the HUD. And without the HUD, the good looking games would be like nice paintings to look at when playing.
What's your opinions about the HUD?
