Maybe this is a stupid question, but what is considered the 'canon' beginning for MGS3? I am referring to the ability to adjust the beginning depending one which game you liked.
If you choose "i like MGS2" you will start of with the Raiden mask, which is kinda goofy but at the same time...it actually shows why Snake has the damn thing in his inventory, as opposed to the other versions just having it in there, only explained if you wear it and Call Sigint (i believe)
The only thing I can tell of "I like Metal Gear" is that Snake is shaven. This is obviously pointless.
I'm not sure what happens with "I like Metal Gear Solid 3" on Subsistence, however.
I'm just curious if it has been clarified which beginning is considered the canon or correct beginning. Most likely not, but if not I am curious as to what you all believe should be.

Well, it being the first Metal Gear game, I would choose "I'm Playing Metal Gear for the first time". That would be legit.

Yeah that is my favorite of the beginnings. But I almost think it's the one for "I like MGS2", considering how in the beginning when he removes the mask they show his name as Jack (David Hayter). Any other way, they say Snake (David Hayter). However, he has not been given the codename Snake yet. This may be a reach though.
Also, the whole sequence of him removing the mask and then leaves falling and him sort of just taking that moment with his hands out and what not, it sort of keeps the nature motif going.
I'm not sure, maybe there is no canon beginning. I just wish there was haha.

You're stressing out over the weirdest things...
I mean, the reason why there is an option for a Raiden mask is for people who like Raiden/MGS2. That's all. No other hidden motive.
But if you are so concerned with it... here's a thought. Why the hell would he wear a rubber mask of a gay man right before parachuting out of a plane into a jungle? Kinda stupid, don't you think?

The mask gave reason for one of the funniest Codec-calls in the game anyways! "Can it move its mouth?"

Hhahaha I'm a perfectionist. I'm not really a believer in that whole "art is free to interpretation". I think the artist always has a meaning in how he works. In this case, I think Hideo had an idea as to which one he had in mind.
Oh well hahaha.

Well, SIGINT mention he created the mask for a mission in which someone would pretend to be a Russian Major. There's a pretty huge bunch of possible conclusions one might make from that.
