My father and I were watching some 60 Minutes (news show) bit on this kid who killed some police officers in a police building. his parents are suing "Take 2 interactove" and Walmart.
They interviewd his lawyer (this guy looked like a total ass. like one of those people who lives in a rich rich rich neighbor hood and is so scared of everyone that they accuse everyone and evrything) the lawyer said that he was, and I quote, "trained to kill". He went on to say how this game is training to kill.
They also pointed out the fact that there is a level in Vice City where you can go in a police station and kill cops in the same manner as this kid did.
It seemed however the 60 Minutes disagreed with what they had to say and that it wasnt the games fault but that the kid had a crappy life and such.
That also brings up the question of how he was in jail in the first place. They never said.
This is very interesting to me, what I am about to say really really makes me question the adults of todays society.
I was watching the local news at 6 when there was story about a teenager from Texas (where I am) was charged with murder when he, supposedly, shot his bestfriend twice, in what he says was an "acident".
They talked to the father and these were his EXACT words:
"kids today think that everything is a videogames. Something happens and they can just hit the reset button and everything is ok."
OH YEAH I TOTALLY THINK THAT!!
I know that if I get a gun and go shoot some innocent people that I will get shot to death by the cops and then be able to turn off the button and come back to life.
The sad thing is that MANY kids/teenagers/losers have gotten arrested and said, themselves, that they were inspired by GTA. I could go into specifics but not now.
Why chose GTA though? Why not DRIV3R? Why not the countless ultra-violent games out there? Or why not the movies you see? The depict the same things I see in GTA only with real people! Not graphics or pixels!!
They chose it because it is the most known and liked. The people like GTA, they want to ban it. People ilke Marylin Manson, they want him dead. People liked Pokemon, they said it was inspiriing violence. People liked Power Rangers (first season not the sh*t you see now.. i mention this because i remember it when i was little) and they also say it inspired violence!! Whats next? If we liked to sit at home and play with yo-yos then they would say some sh*t about that too I bet.
In my opinion, it's not really the game that is responsible for the violence but instead the player. Don't let children with a violent history or shady past lpay violent games. It's common sense!! It's up to the parents to keep the "training" games out of the bad ones hands. Had some of the parents of the, now in jail kids not let them have a game that is rated M for mature meaning that it is for people 17 years or older! hmmm sounds like a rated R movie to me!
I've seen ADD hyper stupid 3rd graders playing GTA Vice City and killing everybody they can see in the game and never hurt a fly. I have also seen the same thing but the kids were ultra-violent! So how should parents know if there kid can handle a game like GTA or any of the countless violent games out there? They should know because they are the parents!! They should know if there kids are given somewhat realistic images of killings that there kids won't go out and re-enact it!
This makes me think however, what if the kid was never exposed to any type of violence. Would they do violent acts? Like I said before, children re-act differently from one another so again it is hard to tell who can be trusted.
Back to the exposure thing, I want to share something with you.
The only way I found out about drugs (marijuana mainly which i do not use) is through commercials. What did I find out abuot weed from the anti-smoking commericials? A lot! What it looks like, what it does to me, how many people supposedly do it, and what how to use it!
Had I never seen those commercials I would have never even known that it existed.
How can we keep these negitive things away from the people they shouldn't belong to?
We can't! There is the right of speech which is in many many forms. From verbal to images! We are not allowed to censor things like GTA or material like that.
I am glad that we are not allowed to censor things like that and I think it is ridicoulus that there are people who actually want to ban such a known object such as GTA.
It isn't really the fact that some people are blamming GTA for the mistakes, but rahter that the fact that they are not taking responsibilty for what they did. They simply blame it on somethings else. Not many people at all can just relize they have made a mistake and admit it, then move on. I just wish people could do that more often, espcially teachers!!
I once had a teacher yell in my face to shut up because I said what he said was wrong. I wanted to say something back so badly but never did. I don't know why I was just embarassed that he yelled at me in front of everybody.
In conclusion, take responsibilty for your own mistakes please. It would make people aroud you enjoy your presents more. Right? Wrong? You tell me!
