Hmm...their "popularity" from their thousands of visitors caused them to shut down.

I would think it's more like what I said a couple of years back, "reality". The FACT is that regardless of the amount of traffic or the member count, it's still a fansite. As in, they can't make money on it since they don't actually own "Metal Gear". So, the more traffic you have, the better technology is needed to accomodate that. Better technology costs more money.
I think that the reality of how stupid it is to fork over money, year in and year out to support a site that is about someone else's product has finally sank in.
It's a FANSITE! Some people tend to forget that and treat it as something else. It's not profitable to pay for a fansite...

Ha, I've probably put $400 into hosting over the years for my site. That was when I used ripoff companies who overcharge you because they use a portion of the money you pay to pay for their own advertising, etc. Now I use a host with very little advertisting and I pay about $14.95 to hold on to the domain every year, and about the same to pay for the hosting.

15 bucks isn't really a big deal. But to accomodate their traffic, I'm sure the number is far bigger.
But the point still remains that it is a fansite. As long as you have no rights to the product name, it will be a tribute site ONLY. So, investing money into it seems rather foolish to me. Especially now when this information is widely available all over the net.

That could be tricky. That would be generating $$ from a Metal Gear name. It's still a fansite, and generating money from it based on someone else's property is probably illegal.

Look at this:
WTF!!! First they begged visitors for money so that one of them could go to an E3 (to do a half-assed, late "coverage") and now this! I can't believe that ANYONE would spend that much money on a fansite, let alone SOMEONE else's site! Why? $750 for a year of covering product that isn't (and never will be) yours... that's just DUMB!

That is a pretty ridiculous amount of money to be looking to get from people searching for free content. The average MGS player is teenaged to mid-20's - not people who usually have a lot of money, especially to give away to a web site. Very ambitious of the TUS fellows, but jesus christ what sort of bandwidth are they pulling and for what content? I'm pretty dedicated to MGS, less today than five years ago for sure, but this is just not a sustainable thing. Is this the price to be the official "unofficial" site? Is it some sort of self-validation or expression of self-realization? I somewhat agree with you Arsenal. But only partially. I can see that to them and many others they are doing the series a tribute by putting this much effort and money into something that they enjoy. And there you have it: they're putting money towards something that they enjoy. Who's to judge that? People throw thousands of dollars away on car kits, various entertainment technology and other hobbies all the time. They see this as a worthwhile endeavor. And I agree, with the exception that it doesn't seem very feasible for any extended period of time if they're struggling to gather funds for only 3 months' worth.
Another thing I don't understand about this money issue they're having is that it's $750 for 12 months worth of bandwidth; broken down into a monthly payment, that's $62.50. They only need to raise $187 to pay for three months' worth of bandwidth. That's a very small drop in the bucket. You can get that much working at Stinky Jim's Shoe Palace in 2 or 3 days. Ryan Kincaid is 22 years old and I'm sure he has a full time job. I wonder how much it would cripple his expenses to pay $62.50 each month. I don't know how old the other staffers are on TUS, but I'm sure at least one other person has somewhat of an income and could pitch in a few dollars. This isn't really that much money if spaced out over a year. What gives, TUS?

I still laugh at just how seriously they take themselves... I mean... it’s a fansite. And now asking people to help them pay for it... LOL.

I used to think the same think before "Bob and George" (popular sprite comic on the internets) began selling advertising space. They use capcom trademarked sprites and all (plus edits of them, which is illegal), but capcom has yet to take iny action watsoever. Nah, I think they don't pull the "advertizing" move because either a) they're just WAY too dumb, or b) they're the kind of people who take their own morals too serious and don't blend with the REAL business world.

Look on the bright side...at least we don't have anyone from there coming over here and spamming out our boards as a last known "attack".
