We see the polls and countdowns of the best characters, games, and series all over the place nowdays. Most are based on personal opinion. So I want to ask people here, what do you feel is the best video game series and WHY. Don't just say "because I like it", give specific reasons.
Some of the most popular reasons given have been the length of the series, the sales, the hype, and the time span. All are valid.
Now it not secret that Metal Gear is my favorite video game series, but I have specific reasons as to WHY I consider it the best. Granted I'm no game expert and my opinion can be classified rather subjective... but I think I have enough valid reasons to back up my claim.
METAL GEAR.
1. Time. This is among the oldest video game franchises, dating back to 1987. For nearly 2 decades this series has redifined gaming. It was in all game formats... 2D, beginning 3D, realistic 3D, handheld 2D, handheld 3D... All of it. Sure there are older game series', but being the oldest doesn't make you number 1.
2. Popularity. The series has had it's ups and downs. Nobody can deny the attractiong MGS became on the PSone and the rabid hype the previews of MGS2 created. Loyal fans or critics, when an MGS trailer rolls at a game show, that's where everyone is. Again, not the largest fanbase, but it's a highly recognized name that's always been treated with awe and admiration.
3. Originality. Let's see, it started the stealth genre and constantly introduced new things into it. Every game added something new to the series, something that the video game industry has not seen yet. Think about it, stealth, complex storytelling, cinematic presentation, and numerous gameplay features can all be attributed to the series.
4. Evolution. Everying constantly changes in Metal Gear. While the core concepts stay the same, the series updates and enhances the gameplay. The story is expanded and the character development is unrivaled. Solid Snake's life is shown from a young to an old man, full of life lessons, joys, regrets, and other experiences that shape and change him. A step above an elf and a plumber that have yet to look or act any different. Gameplay gets more inovative and exciting with each installment.
5. Legacy. How many clones have risen... not only that, but just about all action game include stealth at some point an in some way. Snake is among the most recoginzed characters in gaming. And the Metal Gear series is one of the, if not THE, main flagships of the PlayStation.
Conclusion. It's the most balanced series there is. A 20 year legacy that invented and refined an entire genre. Inovative gameplay that constantly evolves. Unmatched storytelling and character development. And let's not forget the deep lessons that each game offers. Lessons that challenge one's views on their life and the world around them. It is a series that has inpired many others to be created. No, it's not as old as Mario or as fan popular as Halo. It's not the one with the most installments like Zelda or Final Fantasy. It's right in the middle, a perfectly balanced series that offers the best of all worlds all in one package with an unrivaled presentation that captivates generation of gamers.
