I dunno, being honest. On one side, people are going to be pissed because of the lack of backward compatibility, one of the strong points in consoles this days.
HOWEVER, this also means cheaper PS3 units, which is the main complaint of the PS3 and it's biggest flaw so far.
I dunno, really... it seems to me fixing one problem while making another isn't really a good decision at all, but, I dunno...
It's also worth nothing this is ALL because those damn expensive, strange, and delicate BLU-RAY LENSES that are so damn difficult to make.
GENIOUS! PS3 helps Blu-Ray win the format war, but Blu-Ray doesn't help PSĀ· win the console war. I wonder, which war was more important for Sony?

For Sony? I would say the format war. That's a much great audience. That's EVERYONE. I mean, let's face it... VHS what? It's all DVD, for everyone. Now Sony got their hands on the next step, which will gradually grow and replace DVDs. I watched it happen with VHS, this will be the same. Give it a few years, DVD's will be like VHS today.

You made a vital mistake in that analogy there: DVDs were CHEAPER than VHS, and still are, actually. (Almost the same as audio cassettes and CDs: audio cassettes cost almost 2 or 1 bucks to produce, CDs only 10 c). Blu-Ray, however, is MORE EXPENSIVE to produce than DVD because... well... IT'S JUST A BIGGER DIGITAL VARIABLE FORMAT (we got the DV). So, no, in all due honestly, I don't see Blu-Ray replacing DVDs any time soon. Perhaps in the next couple of years a transition will begin, but I don't see people adapting to it so fast as they did with VHS/DVDs.

That's a good point. But everything get's cheaper with time in terms of technology. It'll happen. The switch may not be as fast as it was from VHS to DVD, but it'll happen. You also have to remember that the Blu-Ray sells for more than a DVD, I think an average of $10. So that could be a factor as well.

Perhaps, but we all know most people (not tech geeks like us... and take in account I feel a total indifference to HD) will care about the moeny than nothing else. HD DVD didn't lost the war because of price competition, it lost because of the PS3 (I THINK) and Sony's little head in Hollywood (almost universal fact). But, will people move into it? Most probably. Will it be profitable for Sony? I don't know, though my vote is in "I doubt it". And we all know what happened to the creators of VHS...

I'm happy I bought my 60 gig PS3. It would be a drag to have to have both it and the PS2 connected to the TV at the same time.
