20th Anniversary Games

According to a GameFront post, Famitsu has announced several Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary titles, listed below with their respective release dates as well as their platforms:

* 26.07.07 - Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid Collection (PS, PS2, PSP)
* 26.07.07 - Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)
* 26.07.07 - Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
* 26.07.07 - Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid (PS)
* 26.07.07 - Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)

The news, however is still unclear as of the moment. While the release date of July 26 is more than a month away, there is no official news about the 20th anniversary games for the Metal Gear franchise. Will these be remakes of the game with additional features or special items? Will they be the same games, only bundled with limited edition merchandise? Do they even exist? We have yet to know.

We're intrigued by this piece of news, so stick around with us because we're going to do our own bit of tactical espionage for more info.

Yeah, I saw that. But I really doubt it's something legit, hence I didn't bother putting it up on the site.

First of all, releasing MPO would be fairly stupid. The game just came out last year. Same actually would go for MG, MG2, and MGS3 as the updated versions were released last year in Susbsitence. About the only thing that would make sense is to re-release MGS on the PSP, but even that should wait until next year as it will be the 10th anniversary of the game.

The only way to release something as a 20th anniversary item would be a box set that would have MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2, and MGS3. All playable on the PS3. Releasing the games separately would not be profitable. Hell, MG, MG2, and MGS could fit on one blue-ray disk. And MGS2 and MGS3 can fit on the second. A nice little 2-disk set for the PS3. The 20th Anniversary Metal Gear Anthology Collection.

Hahaah you could fit every MG game to date on a Blue Ray Disc hahaha you have 50Gb to fill.

I really can't see this release happening. There is no logic for it. Yes it's the 20th Anniversary, but so what?

MG - already re-released in 2006
MG2 - already re-release in 2006
MGS3 - already re-released in 2006
MPO - released in 2006

So you got MGS and MGS2. Well, MGS2 won't sell much since it's not generally regarded as a classic by the gaming community. MGS would sell well, but they should wait on that until next year for it's own 10th Anniversary Edition.

But it looks like its been confirmed.

Konami Japan has opened up a special site in honor of the Metal Gear series' 20th anniversary. In addition to a flashy interface, the site provides links to screens, tips and info on all entries from the original Metal Gear to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4.

Further details on the Japanese re-releases that were revealed earlier this week can also be found at the site. As mentioned here at IGN a couple of days back, Konami will be re-releasing budget versions of Metal Gear Solid, MGS2: Sons of Liberty (with The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2), MGS3 (Subsistence version, with the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2) and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. All four re-releases will hit Japan on 7/26 and come packaged in a limited edition sleeve.

We also reported earlier this week on the Metal Gear Solid Collection package, a 6,900 yen bundle that includes all the above games. According to the site, the bundle will also include a special DVD titled "Metal Gear Saga" which will offer a look back at the history of Metal Gear. Details on the packaging will be provided in July. The bundle is set for release on 7/26.

Konami has even more in store for fans. On 7/18, the company will release the Metal Gear Music Collection, which features music from Metal Gear all the way to Portable Ops. Events are also being planned for the anniversary, although details are forthcoming.

The Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary site is in Japanese, but fans will definitely want to take a look.

Im gonna go with AG on this one. Whats the point of this? Just another way to get into people's wallets.

Although, for those who've been living under a rock and arent familiar with MGS, this is a good opportunity to start.

OK, well the Music Anthology is a great thing, I'm sure I'll pick that one up. But the games? I really don't understand the logic here at all.

1. Where the hell is the US release?! I mean really, the US market is what made the series into a juggernaut, and now they are dicking us out of the 20th Anniversary! Bastards!

2. From what I can tell on that site they will release MGS, MGS2 + Document of MGS2, and what seems to MGS3 Subsistence in the a nutshell. You also get Portable Ops, but that one doesn't even have a new packaging. All 4 are set to be release separately. They also show a larger price tag for all 4 together, but I see no binding boxset. Either way, this is a let down.
