It's kinda funny, but the comments made seem worse than an 8/10 score. I never take a review seriously when it complains that the game doesn't deviate from the path established by its predessesors. This is what MG is! Why would he change the style when it's EXACTLY what the fans of the series like?
Fact is, if you didn't like MGS1-3, you probably shouldn't bother with MGS4. But common sense doesn't seem to apply to a lot of critics.

Seems to me the guy went in thinking he didn't like the previous games so he wouldn't like this one. Because if you think like that, you won't. Stupid type of mentality and I sure as hell do not have any respect for that guy.

Pfft.
I heard they gave HALO 3 a 7/10, so I dunno. Either they're too harsh on their reviews, or likero start fires by intentionally giving well known titles a low score.
anyways, what is the purpose of a review?
For different people, it serves different purposes. For fanboys: it provides ammunition. For others, the purpose of reviews is so after reading several of them, on-the-fence gamers can make a decision on whether or not a game is worth their time. Telling gamers to try it themselves basically means they have to invest their time (and money) first and THEN decide whether or not it was worth their time. That system defeats its purpose, so that's why we have reviews.
Not that any one review should be the basis of a gamer's decision, but a review needs to add to the knowledge pool growing in the gamer's head so he/she can combine it with information from several other sources to make a decision.
So did this review do its part by giving information about the game?
NO. This review didn't tell us anything about the gameplay. It didn't mention whether or not it has framerate problems. It didn't talk about how the graphics looked, or if there was a lot of object pop-in, or texture pop-in. Story/cutscenes was the only part it discussed. Kojima is synonymous with long cutscenes, so of course the reviewer should talk about them, but the reviewer needs to avoid being so distracted by them that he forgets to mention other parts of the game.
8/10 is an arbitrary, imaginary number. It means different things at different sites, and it means different things to different reviewers. The 8/10 score isn't the problem with this review. It's the reviewer's ADD-like behaviour of getting so impatient with the cutscenes and complicated story that he forgets to talk about everything else.
This review probably didn't help ANYONE who was on-the-fence about this game.
Reviews have changed. They're no longer about reasonable views, or objectivity. They're not even about independent thoughts, justification, or consistency. They're an endless series of pissing contests, fought by ignorant and egotistical journalists.
Reviews, and their vast consumption of human intellect, have become an irrational, depleted source of reliability.
Reviews have changed. ID-tagged journalists carry ID-tagged websites, use ID-tagged review scores. Illogical opinions inside their minds enhance and regulate their actions.
Hype control... Information control... Opinion control... Message board control. Everything is monitored, and kept under control.
Reviews have changed. The age of journalism reliance is now the age of control, averting catastrophe from reasonable review scores. And he who controls the message boards, controls history.
Reviews have changed. When the message boards are under total control, mandatory criticism becomes routine.

I see what you did there. Took me until the second reiteration of what you were saying before I understand where you were going with that. Funny thing is, it makes some sense.

Any critic is really useless in the end. I mean, everyone likes different things. I have read very few reviews that were worth reading, positive or negative.

That's how I go about reviews. I don't really trust reviews, no matter how good or bad they are. Look at GTA IV. How many perfect scores did it recieve? Take a look at GameSpot. An editor Gave Kane and Lynch a 6/10 for unknown reasons and two people leave, and now their journalistic integrity is questioned.
It doesn't really matter in this case, because MGS4 is gonna be an awesome game no matter what. ;D
I lol'd

How old where you when I got you MGS1? Does it feel strange to be near the end?

I was about 5. Ten years later and now it's almost over. It does kinda feel weird.

It's strange, when I first played MGS I JUST finished High School. Now even college is a distant memory. Wow... where did the time go...

I was 13 when I played MGS. I'll be 21 when I finish MGS4. During those years that we change the most, MGS was there and influenced the way I developed. My views on the world, on politics, on nuclear weapons, the meaning of life... Everything is thanks to Hideo Kojima and MGS. I really mean when I say it; I would have been a completely different person, had it not been for Hideo Kojima.
