As of December 20th, 2008:
Wii – 43.8 million units sold (launched 11/19/2006)
Xbox 360 – 26.4 million units sold (launched 11/22/2005)
PlayStation 3 – 18.8 million units sold (launched 11/11/2006)
PlayStation 2 – 140 million units sold (launched 03/04/2000)
The PS2 is likely to be finally discontinued sometime in 2009. The console did an amazing job of dominating the last generation and still holding out 3 years into the current generation. The Wii is going strong and is a solid leader of this generation.
I truly believe that the PS3 was simply the wrong hardware for this timeframe. The Blu-ray player is cool and all, but the format isn't dominant yet. The DVD format is still strong and will continue to be so for years. Sony lost a lot of exclusives and they didn't not win over much ground in terms of graphics.
It's funny how the simplest and the least powerful console always seems to win. The PlayStation won, the PlayStation 2 won, and the Wii now won. Interesting...

divide those numbers by years on the market.
Wii – 21.9 mil/yr
Xbox 360 – 8.8 mil/yr lol
PlayStation 3 – 9.4mil/yr PlayStation 2 – 17.5 mil/yr
wii dominated and is doing better than the ps2 did at the time but the ps3 didnt do as bad as u may think. this is from someone who think sony is too cocky and likes the smell of their own s***. microsoft just released it early but not too early. ps2 could have done better if the price was right. $600? lol

Not to mention since Sony is reporting a $1.1 billion loss this year, they're cutting the price on the PS3 to $299 in the Spring. 360 is also going down to $249.

I don't know why anyone scoffs at the price of the console. Did you see the price of a Blu-Ray player when they first came out? ~$800, that's how much. PS3 is that and plays games too. Part of the reason Sony is reporting such a huge loss is because they are offering this technology at such a cutthroat low price. They'll be digging out for quite some time.

Your comparison is WAY off. You are comparing the Wii that is basically the "new flavor" and has only been out for 2 years with a system that's been out for almost a decade. The averages are not mathematically comparable considering the fact that the PS2 has been competing against 2 generations of competitors. If you want to do the math right, take the numbers from the PS2 sales for the first 2 years and and compare them to the Wii.
