Can someone explain to me why the Legend of Zelda series so popular? Every "Best Game" and "Best Character" polls usually have this at the top. What makes this series and Link as a character so popular? Any Zelda experts can clarify this?

IMO; The character 'Link' gives the player the role of the hero; the name itself gives perspective to the player (i.e. you) that you are the Link between this 'fantasy' world and the reality which surrounds you. Within the game Link refers to linking to the past. The game is like a dream on your tv where you are the hero. the Music adds a depth of emotion to the on-screen actions of yourself. The balance of silly and 'serious' text only dialogue leaves a lot to the imagination.

You cant understand why. Why? Because I know how into "realistc" games you are that game franchises like this hold little to know no interest to you. The same way I find the Halo series to be bleh because I dislike FPSs. Its because of this that its hard to explain to you what the magic of the Zelda series really is . Its like you trying to explain a fan of beat em games just how awesome MG; no matter how much you explain he'll just go "uh, so i cant attack, i have use something called stealth...?", he just wont grasp the concept. In either case.... www.gametrailers.com/game/the-legend-of-zelda-retrospective/5269have fun. One thing you have to understand though is that Zelda is famous because its been around for so long. 90% of its fanbase (including me) grew up playing these games and watched the series go from 8-bit to current-gen. Thats why its characters famous, because theyre icons who have been around not only since the birth of console gaming, but helped push it forward (like Mario).

Speaking of Zelda, I cant wait till we hear more on the next one. Sure we got Twilight Princess on the Wii, but it was a PORT of the Gamecube. I want a new one built from the ground up for the Wii. I was disappointed that Nintendo didnt announce it at their conference but Miyamoto did show concept art of it afterwards. kotaku.com/5279554/first-look-at-new-zelda-games-concept-artGiving how Link is holding his shield but no Master Sword, and how the girl resembles the sword, Im pretty sure she's the livin incarnation of it. As a longtime fan, this is pretty f...cking exciting. Not only can it introduce a new kickass gameplay mechanic with the Sword being a living weapon, but also a great storyline. Man just thinkin about it puts a smile on my face.

Not into Zelda but have nothing against it. What you said Luxio about a living weapon reminded me of EOE: Eve of Extinction... good times

Zelda is a good series, what little I've played of it. It's in the spirit of adventure like Shadow of the Colossus yet is distinctly it's own things. I've only played the original NES and SNES games, but both of those are so iconic of the era and are really just...fun games. Each game is vastly different from the next...I've read bits of how the series goes. The world of Hyrule is inhabited by Link, Ganon (the villain) and Princess Zelda, but each game seemingly takes place in an alternate dimension, and in each incarnation Link must win the good vs. evil battle. This is an extremely condensed take on the series, but to me, that's what it boils down to. The gameplay mechanics are always interesting, and puzzle solving often opens up new areas and people you meet along the way who help you in your quest.
