Finally! I now have the chance to play this game again at home, nonetheless!
MGS4 is pissing me off. I don't think I really 'get' the whole friendly PMC vs. non-friendly PMC thing. I know blue is supposed to be friendly while any color closer to red is not. Yet everyone is attacking me! Tell me what I'm doing wrong, and please explain that whole system thoroughly to me. Also, someone tell me how to disarm a guard by knocking the weapon out of his hand. I did that once a long time ago, and now I don't know how to do it.
Also, another funny thing I didn't notice on my first playthrough, but if you go into your inventory screen and look at the Playboy magazine, it says some funny stuff on the cover. For one thing, Hideo Kojima is mentioned as being the subject of that month's interview. The featured pictorial is "Women of the Top 10 PMC's", which I thought was pretty hilarious. I can't quite make out the last two things touted on the cover. Anyone know what they say?

Well, there are only 2 chapters in which this is the case, Act 1 and Act 2. In both cases it's a PMC vs a local resistance group. What you have to be careful about is how you act around the resistance guys. You can't attack them. You harm any of them, even accidently, and you're on the sh*t list. Take the first example, right after you meet the MK. II. Go in there and help out the resistance. Help them win the battle by taking out the PMC soldiers and the two striker vehicles. Once they are defeated the resistance guys will welcome you. Also, try approaching them (not in battle time) with a ration equiped. It'll promp you to give one to them to strengthen the alliance.
I would just go on visuals without relying on the Solid Eye. You can tell which group are the resistance and which are the PMCs.
CQC take down, same as in MGS3. Knocking them out works too.
Not a clue, lol. Never paid attention to those.

Thanks, this helped tremendously. They frickin' love me now, their hearts get all aflutter when I'm around.

It seems that different weapons have different styles of CQC. I'll equip a machine gun and instead of grabbing the guy, I'll shoulder him or push him. Or maybe it's just that I press the stick in a different direction.

Yep, that's right. Holding a larger weapon will result in a shove. This comes in handy when fighting off the "zombie" soldiers during escape with Drebin in Act 2. As they climb up to you just shove them with the rifle equiped. Sends the flying off!
Enjoying the game so far?

Oh yeah, enjoying it tremendously, although like with Snake Eater, it's much harder than the last few in some ways. It can be frustrating getting attacked from out of nowhere. Or when a bomb explodes next to you, sending you sailing through the air. Remember I played the game before 11 months ago, although I played it in a disjointed fashion where I didn't get to play every single segment of the game. This is my second official playthrough and I'm finding all kinds of new, awesome stuff. Great thing about Metal Gear games, you can always find something new with each playthrough. I wouldn't say I'm GOOD at this game just yet. Also, you should see the setup I'm playing this on. Wall-mounted top of the line Samsung 52" 1080i flatscreen tv, and the sound setup is the best I've seen yet. A speaker just below the tv, a woofer on the floor, two wall mounted speakers on either side of the screen, two on either side of the room right at about the distance the couch is and two in the back corners of the room.

Sweet sound system man! I'm jealous! I got a 42" screen 1080p. The certainly is a beauty! Wait 'till you do the REX vs RAY on the big screen! Best Boss fight ever if you're an MGS fan!
I can't understand how some people dislike this game. It's simply a marvel, technologically and conceptually. I love the idea of trying to sneak around in a war zone. Instead of "me vs them" it's having a choice. I can slip through the war zone undetected or help out one side. Either way it's a blast!

This game is pretty hard! I've been spotted about 60 times. I mean, sheesh! Can't imagine it on harder difficulty levels. I wish there was a way to obtain a razor and shave Snake's mustache off at some point. Ha ha, that's pretty random, I know. My favorite boss fight would have to be (besides the obvious on SM Island) Crying Wolf. The whole Shadow Moses bit is too awesome to be real, in my opinion. I just love how the new areas we see in MGS4 fit in so well with the pre-existing areas of MGS1. Now when I play areas like the Heliport and the Snowfield in MGS1, I know exactly what the surrounding terrain looks like...it just fits so well. Plus, all the sound bits from the past.
I'm just about to enter Outer Haven now...
I've got plans to update my GENE - MEME - SCENE essay to include SENSE. I've also got a few ideas floating around for further essays, some of which I've shared with TBOL. I think I could add something to my Deconstructing Shadow Moses essay too, now that I've relived the game and everything's fresh.

Did you notice that they stayed faithful to the original MGS and not Twin Snakes? There are A LOT of things I noticed that was changed in TTS that MGS4 ignores. The other weekend I had MGS4 (Act 4) on the big screen, Twin Snakes up on the bedroom TV, and the original MGS1 on the PSP. I was scoping out the area differences. There are more then I originally thought:
1. Canyon: TTS had a ditch but MGS1 and MGS4 do not.
2. Nuclear Warhead Storage Fl. 1: TTS is missing a support column for the corner of the balkony where the guard originally patrolls near the elevator. The column is present in MGS1 and MGS4.
3. Nuclear Warhead Storage B2: The glass wall near that separates you from the Electrical Switchboard was redesigned greatly in TTS. MGS4 matches the original design from MGS1.
4. Otacon's Lab: The Ninja-damaged hallway (dents, bullet holes, swort slices) matches MGS1 and not TTS. TTS had the dent on a different side and the other wall damage was rearanged as well.
5. Otacon's Lab: The Policenauts posters are in MGS1 and MGS4. However, the ZOE poster shown in TTS is also present, but it is partially torn off to reveal the MGS1 Policenauts poster underneath. Symbolic? LOL I think so!
6. Rex's Lair: The room prior to Rex's Lair shows the remains of the multiple gun cameras present in MGS1. TTS did not have them, instead having two patrolling soldiers.

Wow, dang A.G., that's quite the comprehensive list..impressive. Funny that the ninja-damaged hallway, as you put it, bears resemblances to the first MGS. Clearly the developers were studying the model in that game. Also, the MGS1 Policenauts poster - that's an awesome easter egg of sorts!
I'll bet the GF knows when to stand clear. "Uh-oh, A.G.'s in full MGS-mode...he's got all the TV's going with different versions..think now is a good time to read a book."
I didn't notice any of these differences because I've only played from the Rex Hangar on in TTS.
