This is great news!

I think it should have been a PS3 game from the start, more freedom to experiment and perfect co-op play. This is "Metal Gear Solid 5" we're talking about, it deserves the best! PSP is for spin-offs!

When asked whether the new games would be continuing any of Kojima's established series, he replied "The one that I said that I've been wanting to make – this is a new franchise and a new title. For the other couple of titles, it could be something that you always wanted to have."

I hope he's talking about Snatcher or Policenauts. Those are definitely worth an English port or sequel. It's what Kojima fans have always wanted.

Kojima left a tantalising hint that Peace Walker wouldn't be his last foray into the world of Metal Gear Solid. Speaking of the forthcoming PSP title – which has been referred to as his Metal Gear Solid 5 – Kojima hinted that it could be laying the groundwork for future games.

As long as he doesn't resurrect Solid Snake. Matter of fact I don't really care no more. My respect towards the Solid series is not what it used to be. I hope MGS Rising and the titles after that can create something new and refreshing instead of dragging this Patriots story on and on.

IGN: Going back to Peace Walker – it's obviously not the first time Metal Gear Solid has come to the PSP, but how similar will it be to Portable Ops, and what lessons have been learned from that game?

Hideo Kojima: Actually, I don't look back on Portable Ops, almost deliberately because the staff that worked on that game, some of them are working on Peace Walker as well. However, we have a different thinking – we're thinking of a whole new start, almost continuous of Metal Gear Solid 4 - how can we make a continuous version of Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PSP? So I deliberately don't look back to the resemblance or the mistakes made on Portable Ops, it's more the mindset is totally different; we create a new Metal Gear series, just on the PSP. It's a whole new approach.
