Well, it's a little later than the MGS universe timeline would have suggested (or the studies are just being published now), but it seems as though recessive genes can be remedied in adult primates now. Short and easy story here: www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=gene-therapy-cures-colorblind-monke-09-09-16So for those who can't be bothered to read the link, scientists used a virus as the vector to deliver (or rather, infect) color-blind squirrel monkey's eyes with a pigment in such way that it altered and corrected the monkey's vision. Before 'gene therapy', these male monkeys lacked a pigment which females had for seeing reds and greens. A month after 'gene therapy', the male monkeys responded to red and green hues just like females. What's fascinating to me is that they were A) primates and B) adults. Science!
