I played the first uncharted and was a complete disappointment for me; clunky controls, stupified AI, cliche storyline. About the only thing i liked about it were the graphics. so i had no expectations to even RENT uncharted2, but after all the praising online from fans and critics, and my friend nagging me about on an almost daily basis, i decided to see what all the hoot was all about.
my initial impressions?...... HOLY f...ck.
You know, people always said playing a MG game was like playing a movie. thinking back on that, the only time i felt that was with MGS1's intro, wgen you sneak by as the opening credits are still going. everything else is really (good) gameplay separated by (great) story/cutscenes.
playing a movie? uncharted2 is the first game that has made me feel that throughout the entire game. the cinematic experiences that occur while you're still in total control of drake are unlike anything ive played before.
uncharted2 is, in my mind, the best game ive played from this current ps3/360/wii generation. it is phenomenal on almost all aspects:
gameplay: PERFECTLY fluid gameplay, you can be running and shooting, take cover, and next second be having a hand to hand combat and all of it is done with fluid animations and easy and precise controls. the events also flow fluidly; except when you first load the game, there are no loading screens whatsoever, making the whole cinematic experience flow smoothly with no downtime.
graphics: best graphics i have seen on ANY game on ANY platform. the details on every single thing is amazing. the cutscenes are unbelievably eyepopping, their facial movements are so realistic, even durin gameplay; drake's eyebrows, eyeballs, and even the sides of his mouth move if you stand still and examine his in-game character model. the most i remember from snake's face in mgs4 that moved was his hair and when he blinked! LOL now that is detail and bringing life into a character.
story: not the most original story but interesting enough to make you not want to drop the controller. the characters are believable and the story flows great; only a few minutes is all it takes for a cutscene to start and end, not leaving you bored even during the less action sequences. dialogue is pretty funny and not too dramatic that feels fake. the characters come more into life during gameplay when they words with each other while youre playing.
sound: music's great, but then again so is almost all the music in games nowadays. the sound department doesnt fail with all the SFX sounds either, just what you'd expect from such high budget production. the voice acting is top notch, all the actors get into their characters really well and its a ton of fun hearing/seeing them perform. i say "seeing them" because they (the main characters) do all the motion capturing for their characters as well, so they give an even better performance with the voice acting since they also perform everything with their own bodies. even some of the dialogue from mo-co sessions are put in the final game due to yhe performance the actors give at that moment when the theyre really into their character.
multiplayer: almost every game now is adding an online multiplayer in order to appeal to the mass market. i thought this mode was gonna suffer because it'd be a half baked feature included in the game for the sake of including it. But its surprisingly good. the main gameplay translates well into multiplayer, and its tons of fun. incredibly addictive too. there is no lag whatsoever as well so it all plays real smooth and fun.
simply put, uncharted 2 is a perfect example of what the ps3 is capable of if developers put their back into it when making games for it ( and get enough production money ). yeah, not much of it is "new", its a cover shooter with platforming and hand to hand combat, all of which has been done in the past. but its the way that theyre all blended and how beautifully together they flow that makes the game shine. add an amazing mix of production value from sound and graphics, along with the best designed cinematic experiences, top it off with a great and fun multiplayer and you got yourself a masterpiece.
its an almost perfect game with flaws so small i havent seen them yet. 11/10 score from me. i had 10 times more fun playing this game than any current gen game out right now, including mgs4. Its a hell of a ride.
Kudos to NaughtyDog.
Cannot wait for Uncharted 3. >.<
