April Fools day joke? Or truth? It showed up a few days before today though… www.metalgearsolid.org/If it’s true, yet another fansite dies. I think it’s just us and the Soup. LOL Not many active ones left, huh…

It's for real. It has been down for about a month now. Before it showed a 404 Error but looks like they decided to announce theri death in a more understandable manner.
R.I.P. TUS.

Well, that just shows just how useless fansites have become. The truth is, if you want to be big and well recognized, you need to put some money into it. And a lot of time. Frankly, it's not worth it. What do you accomplish as a fansite. Sure, 10 years ago was a different story.... but that's 10 years ago. MGF is a relic in itself. This site SO relates to Old Snake in MGS4. It's a forgotten shadow of the old age of fansites.

Sad, so sad...
My site evidently had some bs malicious code uploaded to it somehow and is currently blocked. I'm on top of that now and trying to resolve it.

Wow! Yeah... the whole fansite bit is really outdated. Official Web improved and Wikipedia showed up. Not much reason to have fansites around.

They are trying to sell the TUS domain for 3K! Hahahaha! Even the biggest of all Metal Gear fansites is still... JUST a Metal Gear fansite. And that means precisely NOTHING! ;D

"I know they lost their bid to make the next generation fighter jet. That plus the reduction in SDI spending...It looks like there was even some talk of a hostile takeover. Everything was riding on this project, I guess." - Otacon
Wow, profiting from the sale of a fansite domain... I guess since they realized their business model was a sustainable one and they were going to get out of the Metal Gear 'business', they were going to have a liquidation sale? Man, that's a little on the side of exploiting their not-for-profit affiliation and status.

This decade really did see the rise and fall of fansites. At the start of it, "we were needed. we were desired. But now... oh things are different".

I really wish there was something to be done with fansites... I don't know, an "evolution" of the idea to guarantee some sort of "profit" from all the time, effort, and money invested... but I really don't see how.
A shame, really. But hey, at least fansites still have some minor uses, unlike webrings which were completely useless since day one (if you ask me).

The question here though, is who benefits from using all these?
