Webrings were thisuseless banners that were always on the bottom (and sometimes top) of starting or outright crappy fansites back at the mid and late 90s that were all the rage back then, since pretty much anybody could start one.
In simple terms, it was a banner claiming the site was part of "X" webring (example: Metal Gear Gaiden "Webring, since back then Gaiden was synonimus with "cool") and the banner itself would send you to another site on the webring... which was another fansite. A big bunch of fansites joining under one single label, you could say. However, since fansites only had so much content (and anficts), in the end you will always end up in the same place: a site with limited content, crappy .jpgs, dancing hamster gifs (or variation) and some very poorly done fanficts.
They died out of their own uselessness when web 2.0 kicked in... and not a single "fudge" was given that day.
