Probably my favorite game trilogy since Metroid Prime. I say "probably" because we've still yet to see how ME3 will deliver. There's always room for failure when there's this much buildup and pressure that it might end up a disappointment (coughmgs4cough).
Anyhoo, unless you don't own an Xbox 360, I dont know why anyone wouldnt play these games.
I could post entire pages describing these games, but it's really something you gotta experience. In terms of plot, nothing like this has ever been attempted.
Basically, before the first game was even made, it was decided it would be a trilogy. A story with a beginning and an end. Simple enough. A sci-fi epic that spawns 3 games. Except, the decisions you make in the first game carry over (with your save file) to the second game. And decisions on the second game carry over to the third game.
And Im not talking about decisions like, what armor to wear or whatever. Actual plot decisions, where you decide who lives and who dies. Which friends will appear in the next game to help you out, and who you had to sacrifice to succeed in your mission. This makes for some unparalleled character development throughout the the plot that every time you're faced with a hard choice, you gotta think twice.
I could go on and on about the plot, but it'd be writing all night long, so I'll just leave at that Bioware has created one hell of a universe, rivaled only by Star Wars, imo. And for good reason. When you're telling a story that spawns an entire galaxy, you better have good attention to detail to conflicts between races, planetary and star systems.
The main character's, Shepard, appearance can be customized. But I prefer his original design. If you mess with his facial structure too much, he'll look crappy during some cutscenes. You can also choose Shepard to be a woman, voiced by the lovely Jennifer Hale. This is really a story for the gamer's to shape.
Gameplay-wise, Mass Effect is basically an RPG-third person shooter. Very self explanatory. The first game was more RPG-influenced, letting you develop your characters more freely which. While the second game focused more on the third person shooter aspect. A bit of a disappointment, seeing how good the RPG elements of the first game made Mass Effect's gameplay as good as it was, but they probably did it to target a larger audience with the sequel.
Anyway, I dont need to keep writing anymore, take a look at reviews yourselves!

This is what 60 dollar games should be about. LOADS of content and entertainment.
And the sequel is no different in terms of awesomeness...
Not gonna say anything else, you can just wtch the review:

What I love about this series is the plot development. There is a lot to explore that is optional, but taking your time to do so rewards you with the amazing attention to detail they put into the mythology of this series. The amount content gives this game some ridiculous replay value. Again, 60 bucks worth of it. Probably even more. I clocked up over 50 hours of Mass Effect 2. AWESOME.
Side missions let you see more into your squad's personal stories, making you grow attached to some, and making you hate others. All the reason why making a bad decision that ends up killing one of your favorites hurt you real bad.
Mass Effect 2's final mission, the Suicide Mission, is just that, a suicide. The outcome of that mission varies from your whole team surviving, to everyone but you dying, to everyone AND you dying as well, in which case you dont get a game over, you get a different ending. That climax is one of the best climax I've played in a video game.
And like I said, whoever ends up dead or alive throughout those two games, STAY dead/alive for the third and final game. Something that makes the game's plot very engaging to play.
Now, there is a PS3 version of ME2 that was released earlier this year. But, if you can avoid it, do so. Its crap. Sure, it comes with 6 hours of DLC free, but the game itself is glitchy as f...ck and outright disgusting. If you have a 360, play it on that, the system it was developed for.
Besides, one should play ME1 first anyway if you want to understand the story. The PS3 version comes with an interactive comic, but packing a 30+ epic into 5 minutes doesnt do it any justice. You'll want to play this series from the beginning not only to get the full picture, but to feel the weight of your decisions you make. And since Microsoft owns the rights to the first Mass Effect, you wont ever see it on the PS3.

Already an epic, now we're just waiting for the final of the trilogy. Hopefully it will live up to the hype. I've played ME2 a few times, but Im transferring my FIRST playthrough of both games to ME3, since it was my first go at the story and I liked how I experienced it.
It hurt me to lose a member in ME1, I decided saving hundreds of innocent lives were more important than the members of the council, I left the Rachni queen live out of pity. It sucked to lose a couple members during ME2's suicide mission, I took time to gather as many allies as I could, and I refused to follow orders and decided destroy the Collector Base. All of these were my first choices, and that's what Im gonna be carrying into the finale. And Im looking forward to it very much.
We finally got our first scans.
