I can't fathom how quickly time goes by. It's almost a year since the release of MGSV and also since the MGS series ended.
So, have you found a replacement? A.G. is probably about to play his annual MGS3 session? Have you any other games to play? New thoughts on MGSV?
Even though I was defending MGSV quite a bit, I am not blind to the fact, that it had so many missed opportunities. I actually liked the twist of Venom Snake not being Big Boss and there are many subtle things tied to that, which work well. However, with so many characters in the game it felt like they weren't used to their full potential. Miller was always angry, Ocelot was rational and calm unlike in any of his other appearances, Quiet was bugged down by doing out-of-character creepy sexy veyeur stuff. No truly memorable boss characters.
The gameplay was great. I even didn't mind, that the world was mostly empty. It was like an Arkham game, where the open world was focused on the specific genre (action in Arkham, infiltration in MGS). However, one different type of landscape would have benefitted the game. And, of course, there were many little things that clearly hinted at the game being unfinished and rushed toward the end. I'm really curious, how much we will know years from now about the obviously troubled development cycle of the game.
I am still playing it occasionally. I like the online modes, but it almost makes the game feel like a weird cross between an MMO, a facebook game and, well, Metal Gear. GOing out, having fun with DDog in the field, free-roaming and ambushing bases with hit-and-run attacks never gets old for me - and then using those resources to expand your own base and make it more secure against other players. Infiltrating FOB's is also devious fun most of the time.
But still, MGSV's main story surely has so much wasted potential. An actual Big Boss becoming insane and interacting with Eli - hell, even Venom Snake interacting with Eli in more meaningful ways could have made Liquid's story even more tragic, since maybe he never really met the real Big Boss and all his hatred was a result of interactions with his double.
Anyway, these are my thoughts - one year later. What are your feelings? Has euphoria worn off? Have harsh feelings against the game softened?
