So I'm in the middle of my MG1 play through and actually found something new!
First, you don't have to kill Shotmaker or Machinegun Kid. It will cost you a ration, but you can get in and out of those rooms without fighting back. The bosses just stay there. You can come back later and fight them if you want. That's rather unique.
Second, forget the RC missiles against the Machinegun Kid. Takes too long. Best weapon is the sub machine gun. Just run a little bit up from the door you came through and unload. The SMG sprays bullets and you only need to land 4 to kill him. The fight literally lasts 1 second.
Just entered building 2. I'll see what else I can find.

Funny, I just started replaying MG1 as well. But I got careless on the second floor and lost a whole bunch of progress. And then I caught a cold and a headache and I haven't played since.
What I think is funny, is how similar MG1 is to MGSV. Silent protagonist, very gameplay driven, bosses that you don't have to beat, relatively open world... Also, MG1 is actually very much Metroidvania.
Will you be replaying all the other games as well?

Assassin's Creed gets a new game every year, and even though the locales and characters change, the series hasn't. CoD is the same way. As for MGS, the games all keep changing from year to year. Everything becomes different from game to game. (Jungle environment, survival and camouflage gameplay in MGS3, war zone and shooter controls in MGS4, motherbase management and mission based structure in MGSPW, open world environment and pretty much total freedom of choice in MGSV)...

Great! Best 2D Metal Gear! Or would you say it's Ghost Babel?

MG2 all the way. It was groundbreaking. It developed the clever gameplay MGS1 got the credit for. Ghost Babel was fantastic as well, but the environments felt less real than MG2. It was a little too Nintendo.

I'd even say, MG2 is overall better than MGS1 when it comes to leveldesign and pacing. Far less backtracking, some huge areas (for the time), great guard placement and a nice variety of environments (sleeping rooms and a sauna!). MGS1 had a lot of backtracking towards the end and the whole freight elevator segment was pretty awful at times (gun camera and claymores while you can't use the radar... that was pretty cheap). Though MGS made these weaknesses up with story, atmosphere, music, cinematigraphy etc. But overall, the leveldesign is a lot better in MG2 imo. Also, do you remember Snake's bucket?
