So I'm doing my annual schedule and it's February. So I fired up MGS1, or rather started with the Briefing files. First a side note, technically MGS1 introduced tapes. The Briefing files are clearly VHS tapes! But back on point. The voice acting is superb! Having played all the games within the last year I can confidently say it's the best in the series. A lot of it has to do with the script. The dialog is simple and very natural. It's not as over the top and dramatic as the other games. It feels very real. And I love the gruff sound quality. It doesn't feel acted.
I ran through the VR missions. Controls are rough... definitely a cringe after MGS5. But I'm very excited to start the game!

Yeah, the VHS tapes were a nice touch. Heh, Big Boss needed cassette tapes, Solid Snake has VHS tapes! Just kidding. It's been a while, but I felt David Hayter sounded too much like... well, David Hayter in the first game. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad by any means, but I feel he truly nailed the character in MGS2. Overall, he got better with each game, imo, and could build in subtleties into the performance. So, you gonna learn what became of Eli and that red-haired kid?

Yeah, that's an issue. For a guy that could move Sahelanthropus, among other things, Mantis really should have crushed Solid Snake with a thought. All the more reason I can't take MGS5 seriously. Ocelot and Mantis are just all wrong.
In any case, I paced myself and just finished the game yeasterday. Always a nice treat. Though nothing will compare to my 2013 playthrough... that was the best gaming experience I ever had.

Yeah, Psycho Mantis. I think, it's reasonable to assume that he was arrogant and was just toying with Snake and that got the better of him, but I guess once he realised he was losing, he should have just simply crushed him... Honestly, Mantis in particular I don't really mind, since the outcome of the battle in MGS1, particularly the reason why Snake can resist his powers and efeat him, is never explained within the narrative of the game. It's because you switched the controller port! Also, Mantis doesn't need to do big things to easily klill Snake: bursting a vein in his brain or blocking a major artery should get the job done without much effort. So, since the whole logic isn't waterproof anyway, I don't have that big of an issue with his over-the-top powers in Phantom Pain. Ocelot was out of character, though. But then again, in relation to the twist, one might say, he was just using you the whole time, while pretending to be your friend and loyal comrade, which is what he did to both Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake in MGS1 and MGS2 and the Patriots in MGS2. Though nothing will compare to my 2013 playthrough... that was the best gaming experience I ever had. Why was that?

MGS1 was an over-night mission. So I did just that. I started the game around midnight. Watched the Briefing, played VR, and then the full game. It was December and I turned the heater down. So it was dark, cold... and intense. A full run through the game. 8 hours. No saves, no continues! An on the original gray PS1 at that! When I finished the sun was up, a cold December morning. Walking outside after the MGS1 ending felt so amazing! It literally felt like I went through the mission.
Best gaming experience I ever had!

So, was that how you did the other games as well? MGS2 briefing, VR missions, actual game? With the heater down...?

So, was that how you did the other games as well? MGS2 briefing, VR missions, actual game? With the heater down...? No, that wouldn't really fit. MGS1 took place in the middle of the night in Alaska. I wanted the playthrough to have a similar vibe to the game setting. MGS2 was mostly day time in late April. lol. Games after MGS1 are a big lengthy for a single day playthrough. Though played by itself, the Big Shell mission is doable.

Depends on your playstyle. I reckon for in-and-out stealth, you can do the games in a day or even less. For Rambo guys, that will be way longer.

Ha...this thread is awesome.
AG, your playthrough makes me think of what I used to do with my old gray PS1 when I'd play the game. I'd erase any previous save files for MGS on it, then watch all the briefings as if I were playing the game for the first time. Then, I'd go through the game from there intuitively, only acting on actions from radio contacts and trying to play it as organically as I could without preconceived notions as to what to do. Somehow that was always refreshing. I used to LOVE playing it on snow days too, that was extra special. I have one specific memory of doing so during a big winter snow storm and after playing it for hours, I went out around noon into the snow and just explored and tracked animal prints in the woods, observing and learning what I could.
By the way, how many times would you all say you've finished MGS1? I put my mark at somewhere in the 80-90 times range. I haven't played it in about 3 years, but I used to play it twice a month or more up until around 2003. Then the number dwindled over time.

Sadly, there isn't any snow in my location. Oh well...I guess I'll just go over the MGS games as and when my fancy takes hold... lmfao

I actually played the game first in february 1999 when it first came out over here in Europe. It was snowy outside and it was one of the first times my parents left me alone in the house for the weekend (or was it a week? I don't remember). Anyway I played through a large chunk of the game in that time.
I've probably finished it ~30 times since then. Last time was a couple of years back in preparation for MGSV. Honestly, the first building almost bores me because I know it so well. It isn't until the snow field that I get really pumped. The hangar with the gas annoys me to this day. Still, the gate out of the tank hangar (with the laser beams) and the PSG-1 still tense me up a lot. And the fights against REX and Liquid and Raven are still pretty intense.
Why was there never another furnace area in Metal Gear? MGS1 hat a lot of variety.
