Came upon an interesting article at Metal Gear Informer. www.metalgearinformer.com/?p=31275Basically, Konami is doing damage control. The confusion was apparently only that people thought it was a full on sequel, when it was really a spin-off. Duh! Honestly, I feel really bad for the little people at Konami, who stayed there to keep their jobs and are now working hard on this stupid idea of a game. And from the footage, it even looks like a competent game. If I was into multiplayer zombie survival games, I might even be tempted to buy it. Also, speaking of the article, in the comments someone posted a picture of Nintendo 1889... I like these decades or century-old pictures. It's almost like a window into another world. Here is hoping they just let Metal Gear die with a shred of peace and dignity ... or do something interesting and bold to bring it back to life. In any case, we still have the games that "told the stories that really mattered", as master Samwise Gamgee would say. Edit: Isn't Yuji Korekado the guy who had this big discussion with Kojima in front of the entire staff in the MGS4 "Inside Perspective" documentary?

Well, it all boils down to the Metal Gear name. Very iconic but also chained to an unforgiving story. Can the name exist without the same story? As much as I hate name exploitation, I do believe this could have been done with Metal Gear. Clearly a new gameplay system was developed between MPO, MPW and MGSV. That could’ve been a new IP but also a different story that branched out of the canon. Take Ghost Babel. It played on the fact that the story of MG1 is very limited and open to interpretation. The events of Outer Heaven are very different in the Ghost Babel timeline. I think they could’ve worked with that. Keep the 1995 Outer Heaven origin, but then tell a different story with a new cast and build a new series. Take the nuclear weapon tank threat into a different direction. And the references could’ve been minimal. MPO could’ve been set in 2035 on a space station and they referenced the 1995 Metal Gear tank as the inspiration for the new tech. No Patriots, no Snakes... none of it. New, fresh plot. Stealth would’ve been inherited and taken into a new direction while retaining the Metal Gear name.
