As you know, I consider MPO, MPW and MGSV as Expanded Universe. Nothing in those games is actually needed to complete the Metal Gear Saga. And we’ve discussed may times the damage these games actually do to the overall story. But as I’ve been replaying the games I did notice a few more items that really don’t allow these games to comfortably fit into the overall story. Really, it’s certain characters. They are vital to their respective games, but they also prevent them from being canon.
MPO Gray Fox - this is a big one. You simply can’t ignore the info given in MG2 dialogue with Fox. In MG2 Gray Fox states that Big Boss saves him twice before he joined his unit. First time was in Vietnam and the second when he was tortured in Mozambique. In MPO Big Boss merely recalls a child soldier from Mozambique. Nothing is said of Vietnam or that he rescued him. The age doesn’t fit as well since in MG2 Fox was talking about his rescue taking place after the Vietnam War when half whites were discriminated against. MPO is set in 1970 and the child story was stated as being 4 years ago, so 1966. And naturally the whole Null super soldier doesn’t fit with MG2. Gray Fox is a major part of both MG2 and MPO. The two stories of his background simply don’t fit together at all. This isn’t a simple retcon in a manual. This is actual dialogue from the games. More than anything, this stamps out MPO.
MPW Huey - so we know that Huey was born in 1945. In MPW he states how well he knows Granin. In 1964 we see a picture of them in Granin’s office. Even if the photo was taken earlier that year, which it certainly wasn’t, that would make Huey 19 years old. The man in the photo is much older and is clearly standing. The whole wheelchair bit and friendship with Granin was added in MPW. This photo certainly contradicts this as it is clearly his Hal’s grandfather. It’s not a huge piece, but I definitely see Huey as a big mistake for the overall canon, even more so in MGSV. And since MGSV and MPW are so closely connected, if one doesn’t fit, they both don’t fit into the overall saga.
MGSV Hal - Hal was to pilot Metal Gear. That’s stated on screen. That’s what caused the issues with Huey and Strangelove. So how is it that Hal recalls his grandfather working on the Manhattan project but nothing at all about his father’s work? Huey was all about Metal Gear! From the AI machines to Sahelanthropus. Yes, Hal was very young. But I find it hard to believe that he learned nothing about his father and all the previous mecha in the series. Once again, Huey is a major retcon for the series and prevents the games he is in from fitting into the story.
MGSV Venom - ah the big twist... Snake actually fought Venom in Outer Heaven instead of Big Boss. But not according to MGS4. In that game Big Boss clearly states that Snake erased him twice before, referencing Outer Heaven and Zanzibar. Now I know, the counter argument is that Venom was posing as Big Boss for official records. But if that was the case, Big Boss would say so. He had no issues saying that the body burnt by Liquid on the Volta was a clone. Why would he still pretend that the Outer Heaven battle didn’t happen? He wouldn’t. He was dying and was revealing everything.
Now I know, these games came out later and added these new elements that weren’t covered in the original story. But at the end of the day, if you play them chronologically, the story does not work. So regardless of the gameplay that some may like, the story is far more crucial in this situation.
