Hey there,
So, I was thinking, Red Dead Redemption II has been out for a while and got lots of accolades and people love it everywhere or point out everywhere just how flawed this game actually is.
I haven't finished the first one until last October (in preparation of RDR2) and I have to say, while I loved it for the most part, I also though John Marsten was pretty much an idiot the whole time. I don't get why people liked him so much. He is so naive and let's people f*** with him all the time. Maybe that's his tragedy. I also didn't like just how much they borrowed the formula from GTA and it doesn't always fit. Some of the later missions also got tedious.
Now, RDR2 is currently my favorite open world game (up there with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and maybe some others that I can't remember right now). I love the story quite a bit and also like the protagonist so much more than John Marsten. The story also feels very consistent with RDR1 and I bet once I'm done, I'd like to play RDR1 again. On the other hand, there were many little additions to gameplay that make it feel very different from GTA. What Rockstar nailed with this one imo was the presentation and overall open world design. Just riding around this breathtaking world (which looks like a Naughty Dog game) is rewarding in itself. You constantly find an animal, a passerby, a landscape that's interesting, but the world still manages to feel isolated and not like a collect-a-thon a la most other open world games. Actually, this is the best horse-riding simulator we've ever gotten, and since I've come to love horses in recent years...
In terms of gameplay, there is a lot of apparent depth, which more often than not turns out to not at best ankle-deep. It seems like you have to hunt, eat, sleep and care for your horse, but in reality, it doesn't make that much of a difference if you ignore all that. Also, the individual story missions are fun, but leave virtually no room for creativity. Since I don't mind the Naughty Dog experience, I'm fine with it. Especially when I have a lot to do during my week, I like a little more laid back linear gameplay, but I can see how some people may be annoyed, especially since games like MGSV give you so much room for creativity, that two playthroughs never seem to play out the same. So, that's my only real negative here... oh, that and the fact that the game is long... like really long! And I don't have that much time anymore.
Overall good game, but since I started my teacher education, my playthrough halted to an almost complete stop.
Other than that, I haven't played much, other then starting up Dark Souls I, which I loved, but was too stressful for me after an already stressful work week.
How about you guys? Anything interesting in your Console or PC? Any recommendations? Any classics you discovered?
