So, obviously your favorite series is probably Metal Gear, or at least one of them. But what else has much of your love?
So, for me, my favorite is still Metal Gear. I love the story, the gameplay, how everything evolves between games and each game plays very different from the last, yet also familiar. I also think the convoluted timeline makes surprisingly a lot of sense for something that was entirely made-up as Kojima went along. But that's a discussion for another topic.
My favorite games: definitely MGS3, as the gameplay was pretty deep, and the story was just perfect. Simple story, with complex morality.
Other than Metal Gear, my Top 4 at the moment are:
Number 4
Assassin's Creed (love the historic setting and grand storyline, even despite some very formulaic gameplay and some dumb aspects, such as the static modern day storyline. Favorite game in the series: Ezio Trilogy (AC2, Brotherhood, Revelations), which tell one big story about a character's entire life. And the modern day story seemed like it actually meant something.
Number 3
Yakuza Series. What can I say, I love Japan and this series is the perfect way to experience it short of actually traveling there. The main series focuses on the former yakuza Kazuma Kiryu and his attempts to try and build a normal life for himself and his foster-daughter Haruka. Through 6 games and a prequel we see her grow up and see them have many struggles. The open world is fairly small, but very detailed and the series feels very personal. It is also very upbeat, despite some melodrama and intentionally clashes the darker melodramatic tone of the main story with the crazy gameplay and side-story antics. There are also several spin-offs that are mostly non-canon and change up the setting, but are also often Japan-only. Fovorite game: Yakuza 0. The prequel is set in the 1980s, has the best version of the combat system and, like MGS3, tells a strong standalone story, that still ties nicely into what came before.
Number 2
Uncharted series. Despite some dumb gameplay, actively discouraging creativity at times and some very cheap difficulty spikes, these games just make me Smile.
They also have some of the most well-written characters in all of gaming. My favorite game: UC4, because it has the best story imo, more open areas and also dialed down on some of the more annoying encounters. But UC2 is a close second. Btw. I somehow never got into The Last of Us. It was always a bit pretentious to me and the gameplay too simplistic somehow. But with Part II up, I'll give it another try if I got the time.
Number 1
Red Dead Redemption series. This one I only got into fairly recently. Especially RDR2 has become one of my favorite games of all time. It has such a gripping narrative about decay and redemption. Both games together tell the story of the Van-der-Linde gang, which in the beginning of RDR2 (a prequel) are like family and over the course of the series deteriorate and unravel completely with many characters dying. RDR1 picks up where RDR2 leaves off and follows one member being forced to trek down former members of the gang and killing them one by one. Honestly, it's just a well-told story. Gameplay wise... RDR1 is basically GTA on a horse, for better or worse. It's a lot of fun, but starts to drag after about 1/3. RDR2 on the other hand is just a completely different experience. It really lets you role-play as a cowboy. Horses are no longer like interchangeable cars, they have unique appearances, personalities and you bond with them over time. You can talk to anyone in the game. The main character Arthur is actually one of the few open world character where you can play honorable or dishonorable and it fits with the character in the story either way. The world changes as the story progress and there is just so much detail and just hanging around the world is just a treat. When it comes to actual mission design and shooting, however, it's often as linear as a Naughty Dog game with zero room for creativity. Also, while there are a lot of systems in place (horse-care, maintaining your character and his weapons, food, etc.), most of them are so shallow, that you can mostly ignore them.
Other favorites, which I haven't played in a while, but remember liking quite a bit are:
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, NieR: Automata, Ico/ Shadow of the Colossus/ The Last Guardian Trilogy, Final Fantasy X and XII remastered.
How about you?
