Yup, agree with the top pick. I think, MGS3 is the best game in the series, but it owes so much to MGS1 and the entire industry as well. Plus, ironically I feel the story is much more self-contained, since MGS3 lives a little from the irony of knowing that the protagonist at some day will be the antagonist. Without that knowledge, this game is still great, but something is missing.
MGS1 is more important to the industry and series, has a more self-contained story and is just awesome. Personally, MGS1-3 were the series' peak, with MGS4 as a very cheesy, fan-servicy conclusion to that.

Definitely! MGS1-3 were gaming gold! MGS4 started to show that the series was struggling to maintain pace, much like Old Snake! lol
