Top 10 Favorite Moments

I thought about this a few times, usually during MGS4 relays. It can change over the years. But what are your top 10 favorite Metal Gear moments? Could be cutscenes, could be gameplay, could’ve be a mix. No restrictions.

1. Rex vs Ray (MGS4) - the dream match I wanted since the E3 2000 trailer and it was glorious! Never been more hyped playing a video game!

2. Big Boss Salute (MGS3) - the ending of endings... what can say... it’s the best ending I’ve seen to anything.

3. Sniper Wolf’s Death (MGS1) - in my opinion, it’s the perfect scene. Very personal, very emotional, with perfect music and stellar voice work. That scene set the bar in my opinion.

4. Snake vs Ocelot (MGS4) - what a kickass way to end the series... the cutscene to fighting transition is brilliant. Then you recap the series through a fist fight... EPIC!

5. Motorcycle Escape (MGS3) - cutscenes and gameplay mixed together for an adrenaline rush! Young Ocelot and the Shagohod behind you... amazing! And that music!!!

6. Snake and Big Boss (MGS4) - from the gun in the mouth to the hug from a father to his son... it’s the ending I didn’t expect but so happy I got.

7. Return to Shadow Moses (MGS4) - a screenshot of the MGS4 heliport should be in the dictionary under definition for nostalgia. Perfect moment! The song... the memories...

8. Gray Fox vs Rex (MGS1) - a deranged cyborg fighting a walking tank... I should not like this. And yet... this moment is so special!

9.The Tanker (MGS2) - probably my favorite mission. The setting, the length, the weather... everything was perfect! It’s why Ground Zeroes is the only part of MGS5 that I liked.

10. The Handshake (MGS2) - small moment, but when Snake and Otacon do they handshake and hug... just incapsulates their friendship. Love can bloom on the battlefield.


For the record, MGS4 is not my favorite game. But it’s also why I forgive it so much. It has moment after moment that just hits the right notes. Granted, they don’t all go together... lol... but when they shine the are bright!

Puh, too many to choose from.

In no particular order and off the top of my head:

1. Arsenal Gear (I love how reality is just falling apart for Raiden here).

2. Shadow Moses in MGS4

3. Snake vs. Ocelot (MGS4)

4. Big Boss vs. The Boss (MGS3), also the ending

5. Venom Snake vs. Sahelanthropus (MGSV) (Also the fights against Peace Walker and ZEKE).

6. A Quiet Exit (MGSV)

7. Snake vs. REX & Snake vs. Liquid & Escape (MGS1) (okay, I'm cheating here a little, but give me a break, will ya^^)

8. Tanker Mission (MGS2, even today the game still just oozes with atmosphere. I can feel the cold wet rain and smell the salty water)

9. Sniper Duel against Crying Wolf (followed by the one against The End, but this one had more dread and atmosphere and was on a single map)

10. The tapes that reveal Strangelove's fate & Huey's trial (MGSV) (really haunting, really hard hitting, If you were into MGSPW)

11. actually, I think Venom Snake learning the truth about his identity is close, but it being just a 1-on-1 replay of the first mission really took the wind out of this one.
12. B&B Unit's first appearance. (MGS4)
13. Pretty much all Otacon and Snake moments in MGS1 and MGS2
14. the "fight" vs. The Sorrow (MGS3)
15. Fight against Gray Fox/ Cyborg Ninja (MGS1)
16. so many more.
17. Ocelot's torture


I also really loved Peace Walker and the MS2 games, but cannot really boil it down to single moments. That's really how I generally feel. I'm not one to rank the Star Wars films for instance, since it's all one big seamless story to me. Similarly, Metal Gear is one big seamless experience and I honestly love all of the 9 Kojima games, even if I don't like every bit of them. I also notice that some of my favorite moments here were also some of my most infuriating moments, particularly A Quiet Exit, the fights against Peace Walker, SAhelantropus and ZEKE, probably because it felt like a huge accomplishment once I finally beat them. A Quiet Exit also added Quiet leaving, which despite knowing about it and me having issues with her character, left a pretty big impression. The mind-f***s are also always well done I think and nailed it.

You know, I can’t stick an MSX moment in the top 10, but... there is one part in MG2 that I somehow always relish. Every year. Flying over the crevice in the hang glider. Don’t know why... just love that moment. Maybe because it’s one of the few actual cutscenes in the game. There is a sense of “now entering act 3” to it.

Yeah, especially since I never figure out what the deal with the grenades and the wind is. Always feels more like luck to me than me solving the puzzle. I also think MG2 might have by far my favorite Metal Gear soundtrack. I mean, Snake Eater, Heavens Divide and Sins of the Father are great songs, but I'm not into Harry Gregson William's style of scoring (I prefer John William's more classical instrumentation) and Ludvig Forssell didn't do much for MGSV although some of his tunes do nicely underscore the sneaking, but it's not exactly memorable music. MGS1's music is also really good, but not quite as catchy as MG2. And MG1's music just gets really annoying after a while. Although "The best is yet to come" is really my favorite gaming-related song.

So, yeah, it's really between MG2 and MGS1 as the best soundtracks of the series for me.

Love the MG2 tracks! Also, the MGS1 VR missions remixes of the MG2 tracks are beautiful! Weapon and Advanced modes... magic!
