So, after Years I recently booted up MGSV again. Decided to do a mission for the side objectives. It was the C2W mission (where you have to destroy antennae). I first did. ghosting stealth to extract two prisoners, then I went to the actual outpost, got busted and almost died. So I changed my loadout and put on heavy armor and went in guns blazing and kicked the sh** out of this entire base. Both approaches were so much fun and worked so well. First I basically played Splinter Cell on hard mode then switched to Uncharted just less scripted.
All of this made me realize just how well MGSV is designed how well it plays. Other open worlds may be more alive but just by its core gameplay I think I have never played an action game that was as well designed, as polished and gives you as much freedom of choice in how you approach missions as MGSV. Uncharted is too scripted, Red Dead also when it comes to missions. What impresses me most is how effortlessly these different gameplay styles transition and flow into each other. Ultimately getting caught isn’t a screw up, just a change of pace. Really awesome game. I just want to post another love letter here to the game and by extension the series, as all games have attempted and occasionally granted this level of fidelity and freedom and worked towards it until Kojima finally perfected it.

I agree. I’ve had Ground Zeroes in my annual playthrough for a while and it’s exactly as you say, so many ways to play it. I do stealth and action and it all feels intuitive and free flowing. The game holds up today. I wish it had some indoor areas, that my only gripe. Well, and knocking. lol
