It’s been a while.
As time goes on we tend to look at things in a different light and maybe appreciate certain elements more. I found that my thoughts on the series have changed with the times. I still have my usual replay schedule for the series and that also impacts my rankings. Games that I haven’t been tempted to revisit in years simply don’t even make the list for me.
It’s 2023 and I’m still playing Metal Gear, so these games certainly got something right! I also try to be mindful of the system limitations for each game.
1. MGS3 - while other games may surpass Snake Eater in some categories (controls, graphics, characters, etc) no other games ranks so highly in EVERY category. So all around, this the the GOAT!
2. MGS2 - this games grows on me with each passing year. My favorite soundtrack and easily the smartest game in the series. It’s the Watchmen of video games!
3. MGS1 - I don’t think much needs to be said here. The story, the characters… the legend! This game made complex storytelling in gaming a reality.
4. MG2 - simply brilliant! The most clever game in the series and the prototype for what made the series so great!
5. MGS4 - a game that would never be made today… and probably the best example of how to use nostalgia well! So many unforgettable moments.
6. Ground Zeroes - I love that little sandbox! The mood, the visuals… just wish the rest of MG5 was like that. Love all the side missions… so much fun!
7. MG1 - it’s very basic, but there is a definite sense of charm playing it today knowing what it started.
8. Peace Walker - I only play a few chapters and treat it like Big Boss mercenary days in the 70s. I dont care for the main story. But a few bits here and there are enjoyable as an addition to Ground Zeroes.
