I got the game and started it at midnight the day it came out! I should note that my approach is a little different. For both the original releases and the Legacy Collection, I always go through all the games, unlock everything, then make save files that allow me to go to any point in the game with everything unlocked. That definitely takes time since it requires multiple playthroughs of all games. Since it’s been less than a week, I’ve only just began. However, I have played all 5 games. So here are some thoughts and reactions based on my current progress. Noting I have the PS5 version.
Interface - love it! It’s been a dream to see all these games as separate icons the main menu. And to see MG1 and MG2 FINALLY get their own spot, separate from MGS3 is fantastic! The menus are all clean and well done. Books, options, versions… all stellar! Love having all the versions available.
MG1/MG2 - I only started these to check them. Will be doing the full playthroughs in December during my annual MSX run. Will play the, twice, once to unlock the bandana and once to make the saves. But at a glance they see, to be exact ports of what we got in the Legacy Collection.
MGS1 - While I’m happy to have this playable on the PS5, this one has issues. Yes, all the versions are great to have. However, the first standout glitch is sound. It’s BAD! Very compressed with a lot of crackling. Way worse than on PS3 and even PS1. I compared with my systems. The music after beating Mantis was almost cringing. And I have a good sound bar. They need to patch that ASAP! The only other issue I found was first person view mode. There is now only one speed. Before you could control how fast you move the camera while holding the triangle button. Now you can’t. No subtle up and down, just all the way up and down. It’s like the game doesn’t recognize that the analog stick is pressure sensitive. Another bug that they need to adjust, but not as drastic as the sound. I do give them props on the Mantis save files. Well done! This one will require the most playthroughs to get stealth and bandanna on both regular and Integral versions, so I’m sure I’ll find something else.
MGS2 - only beat the tanker so far, but haven’t seen any issues. Seems like a direct port of the HD edition. Wonder if the Fortune cutscene is fixed (where you hear the sea lice but don’t see them). Collecting all the tags. I should note that I never liked the pressure sensitivity buttons to lower the gun when aiming. I frequently shot instead of lowering the gun. The new solution of pushing the left analog stick to lower the gun is great!
MGS3 - spent a lot of time here, almost through with the first Playthrough. No complaints or glitches here. Looks and sounds great. And they fixed the cutscene when The End stands up. On the PS3 the background was just white. It was nice to use the old guidebook to find all those cammos again!
NES - not much to say here. Nice to have them but a great reminder of how frustrating they are. I don’t expect spending any time on them.
Motion Comics - nice to have English and Japanese, but a bit pointless. Would be ok if they didn’t take up so much space! Like 11GB each! So Im only keeping the English ones.
Overall - naturally Im fairly early into it and would need to go through everything to get the full picture, but it’s a solid start. Pun intended! There is a lot here and for those that weren’t looking for upgrades and just wanted the games playable on modern hardware, this is great! The MGS1 audio issue needs to be fixed. Sound was a major part of that game’s overall vibe and its very distracting. I should also note that I haven’t seen anything that was cut. There were concerns about some copyrighted content being removed. But so far everything was there in MGS1 and MGS3. MGS2 has some footage that may be impacted, but Im not far enough into the game yet.
Very curious how they will handle MGS4 for Volume 2!
