Let's discuss a potential sequal. What you want in it, how and why.
I want a game that takes place in the 80's. Something that directly leads to Outer Heaven. This game should also explain who is Null 2 the Mystery Character. I also think that late 80's would be the way to go so that they can throw in Solid Snake. Perhaps a young soldier who you find during the game. Have Sokolov working on a new creation with the help of Petrovich. What a great way to set up MG1!
With another Portable Ops they can officially split the series evenly:
Big Boss Saga: MGS3, MPO, MPO2 Transition Period: MG, MG2 Sons of Big Boss Saga: MGS, MGS2, MGS4

I don't want them to explain who Null #2 is in a Portable game. That's heavy weight info I think should be revealed in GOTP.
I'll post back later with ideas.

The problem with that is it would have to be a mere reference, you won't actually meet the character unless they use something REALLY dumb like a cyborg body. In MPO2 you would actually be able to meet/fight the person responsible of the death of The Boss.

I would like to see a young Liquid Snake in it as I get the impression he had met Big Boss when he was younger (though it wouldn't be a happy relationship). I would definately love to play a followup game like that.

Ocelot was around in SE, so someone a little older and wiser perhaps. Liquid Snake was a cool idea. How about this: They make three Portable games. The first one starred Big Boss. The second one stars Liquid and the third one Raiden. Playing Raiden as a child soldier would be very controversial, but effective nonetheless.

I would not want anything with Raiden in it. He is not really that important of character to the overall cannon...

Yawn...
Don't forget that the point of Metal Gear games is the Metal Gear tank. What, you'll have an 8-year old Raiden taking down a Metal Gear? Get real.
Same goes fo the Liquid idea, it just something that won't happen.
The only filler game that can happen after the events of Outer Heaven would be Snake's Philanthropy work after Shadow Moses. Short missions, destroying Metal Gears, and setting up the events up to MGS2.
To be honest, the one game that I REALLY want is:
Snake's Part in the Big Shell!!!

Meta Gear games being all about Metal Gears is srta wrong. They could easily skip having Metal Gears in future games. They could have skipped having Metal Gears in past games too. The point of Metal Gear Solid is to tell a message. Many seem to forget that. That's why we have so many people wanting to play as Snake in MGS2 for example. Personally I don't think it's important with a game set between MGS and MGS2. I like the (eventual) Portable series to take place before Metal Gear 1.

The central point is the story, but it's also a game. People who take it too seriously, like you for example, tend to forget that. It's a game, with an established formula. Which means you DO HAVE TO fight a tank of some sort. Without it you got Splinter Cell. Story and Gameplay are two different categories, both of which need to be satisfied and followed closely.

Um yeah. What I like about Metal Gear Solid is that it has superb gameplay and great stories with undelying themes. I don't believe I'm taking it too seriously. For me, Metal Gear Solid is a work of art, unlike for example Splinter Cell which is only entertainment.
But I think we (or at least I) are getting way of topic now.

I don't think we are. The point I was making is that there are things that a Metal Gear game HAS to have, and a Metal Gear tank is one of them. Kojima himself stated how stupid it was when the NES version of MG1 took the actual tank out. That's the whole point of the game.
This is where I disagree with the Raiden game idea. Some kid running around on a battlefield.... what's the point? In such a game it would really be him and Solidus, and neither one really matters in the long run.

Have you ever bothered to stop and actually think about it? Have you read any of the many competent analysis on the Raiden-in-MGS2-thing? Hell, when some people say it was stupid to have Raiden, I say it was down right genious. Of course that's just my opinion, and not many people agrees with them, but hey. ;D What I meant with going off topic was that this thread is about ideas for Portable Ops 2. And talking about PO2.... I doubt the next game would be about gathering soldiers, spies and other people, so what should PO2 feature instead of the squad based gameplay mechanic?

I didn’t say Raiden wasn’t important to MGS2, I said he is not an important character to the Metal Gear cannon. To have a whole game dedicated to his background, especially without a Metal Gear, would not only prove to be a financial failure but it would add nothing of value to the overall Metal Gear story. Raiden was there in MGS2 to give a different perspective on Snake. You can replace him with ANYONE, and the game would be no different. Therefore, I say that dedicating an entire game to his background would be a waste of time and resources.

I reckon It would be cool to play a young Green Snake in the Gulf war time (Solid or Liquid they were both there) Big Boss Could be your radio support like MG1, and with a bit of imagination u could have Madnar and a prototype TX55 in it, its only 4 years before Outer Heaven, Maybe thats what Big Boss could be after.
