I rag a lot on MPW and MGS5, true. And some points were made about retcons in other games. In fact I hear a lot about a blanket statement that the series is full of retcons. So let’s talk about them. MG1 to MGS4. What are the retcons? Are they serious?
So the most common one I hear about is Snake knowing Big Boss was his father when he killed him. He said that in MGS1 and yet no such dialogue exists in MG2. Is that a retcon? Well, in MGS4 Snake talks about being personally trained by Big Boss. So it’s very reasonable to assume that Snake knew the truth long before even the Outer Heaven mission. If anything, that adds to the angry demeanor Snake has towards Big Boss in MG2. As such I don’t see this as a retcon since MGS4 added that bit of info.
Another one that is a notable one is Liquid saying in MGS2 that Big Boss was in his late 50s when they created his copies. After MGS3 we know that is false. Big Boss was born in 1935. The clones were born in 1972. He was 37. Definitely a gap there. There is no information, however, on when Solidus was created. Or how. We know Eva didn’t give birth to him. And even in MPW they only mention Liquid and Solid. It’s possible he was created much later. Still, this info is a retcon that at best can be classified as Liquid not having the full info.
Liquid Ocelot was another topic that I discussed way back. Did Liquid really possess his body in MGS2. MGS4 doesn’t clearly say it, but suggests it. However, there is enough canon points to show that it still fits. Ocelot’s possession was always meant to be a trick to fool the AIs. But as you know he did remove Liquid’s arm and put on a prosthetic after MGS2. Even officially it was stated that it threw his psyche out of balance. Well, it fits. His father was The Sorrow, a sprit medium. It’s possible Ocelot had some dormant powers that interacted with Liquids genes in the presence of Solid Snake. This is clearly notable in both MGS2 scenes where not only his voice but his hair changes. As Liquid takes over you see his hair get much shorter. So I don’t see this as a retcon. Its very much supported by other points.
Vamp’s powers being explained as just nanomachines. Lazy? Absolutely! But not impossible. Look at The Fear. He showed ability to run on water without any nanomachines. So while nanos enchanted his healing, it’s possible Vamp had similar abilities to The Fear. And nanos May have enhanced them as well. I think The Fear justifies Vamp.
What retcons have you noticed up to MGS4?
