A bit of mystery is always better. And I loved that about MGS. It was very grounded, but had these little supernatural elements that were never explained (before 2008) and elevated it to another level. Although admittedly, Vamp was an actual Vampire! But I think MGS2 more than any other game in the series (until maybe MGSV) wanted us to question the reality of the game. Starting with MGS4, more things were explained that didn't really need explaining - hack, even the Patriots themselves. I assumed from the ending of MGS2 that they actually were an A.I. that formed in the web, a program or series of programs that acquired sentience, similar to the Puppet Master/ Puppeteer in Ghost in the Shell. That was very intruiging. And I liked Snakes ending monologue of that game. But I digress.

I don't think MGS5 made us question reality. MGS2 did that well. MGS5 aimed for that, but I feel it failed completely.
